Well I workout at home and started at 150lbs. I know weigh 218lbs. and have 18.5 inch arms so I don't think it is a waste of time. I have an adjustable bench, Squat rack, 2 olympic barbells, 2 olympic dumbells, 1 e-z curl bar, 1 tricep bar, and over 800lbs. of weight plates. Also belive it or not I do have a bowflex and find it works great for certain cable movments such as flys and pushdowns.
