Working out alone

New Jack

New member
How many of you guys work out alone as opposed to with a partner? And also if you do work out alone, how do you do lifts that require a spotter?

Why is it people like to work out by themselves?

i sure as hell do , not that i dont like people but i do a varity of things at the gym, plus i wouldnt want to exaust my partner :D

Been working out by myself for about 10 years now. I train at
odd hours, which is the main reason, because I do believe in a
good training partner. Anything too heavy, for safety, I use a
Smith machine.

I work out alone... I have no friends that are into weight lifting at home... Oh well, I don't worry about it...

YUM

I dont know anybody that can follow my scheduel. Many people will not get up at 5am to go to the gym that I know. I do hate it sometimes when I do heavy bench days having nobody to spot me.

yea i have a partner by the name of smith too , he stays at the gym 24/7 and he never ever misses a workout when needed:D

unless there is anyone here that has a ever-changing work hours that lives in around Lake Lanier in GA.

i work out alone with no partner. if i need a spot, i ask the guys i know are strong and knowledgable at spotting. thats all

i have so many injuries from 19 years of weight training that i can't do many exercises that a partner would want to do. i know when i'm approaching failure and stop after the last rep i can do alone...experience has taught me what it feels like. of course i am deprived of the benefits one gets from training past failure but with my screwed up joints it's better not to push it that far on big compound movements (or else i'd be taking a long injury layoff anyway).
definitely use a partner until you truly know your body and the messages it sends.

i also wear a headset (mp3 player) so that would inhibit having a partner, too.

Alone. I will accept a spot occasionally when someone offers.
I like working past failure but don't want the hassle of looking
for help all the time. I do anything that traditionally requires a
spot in a power rack (box). MY problem is people running up
to me on my last rep to help out even though I have the rails
set where I can get out without being squashed. They are
usually pretty embarrassed when I show them that I can get
out no prob. I feel really bad for ruining a good Samaritan. I
hope no dumbass kid gets seriously hurt because someone
offered me help I didn't need and felt dumb.

I am lifting alone for a bit now. The wife got me a bench for Christmas a couple yrs ago. I bought a squat rack the next yr because if I bench heavy, I have a safety cage. I have played and repped out with 275 and been caught with no spot. Its a bitch to roll 275 down my fat ass. It compresses the fat enough to leave little bruises. I'd rather lift with a partner. Best friend has no dedication or responsibility. He won't call, just won't show. Thats unacceptable. I lift alone( does that sound kinda lke George Thorogood(sp)?)

I prefer to work out alone so that I don't have to deal with someone else's routine, bitching, and lazienss. I haven't found anyone committed to excellence to work out with. I'm tired of working out with people who use poor form in order to lift more weight and then try to brag about it. I hate working out with people who get in there and then complain about doing "work" in the gym.

For the most part I use dumbells to avoid needing a spotter, but when I want to max on bench I convince someone to work out with me.

The last time i didn't have a partner i almost couldn't get the last rep while i was benching and just about squashed myself. I had a serious survival mechanism kick in because the bar was starting to lower down and i ended up somehow getting the strength to push it back up.
I think i'll stick w/ a partner.:D

I prefer to work out alone because my routine is geared not only around my goals, but my injuries as well. It would be rather difficult for someone to train the same way I do, and it would irritate me to be constantly changing everything to fit or suit someone else. Plus, I do not like to talk when I am training.

"good job arioch...we sound similar with the injuries...also we both list our locations as Hell"

I think the one of us who has been married longer has seniority.

I also work out alone and besides knowing I will get crushed if I don't lilft the weight gives me alot more incentive than some dude screaming in my face "come on man it's all you":D

I workout alone because its a job for me, and to get it right you need to stay focused. It might take me longer but thats a small price. All I have is time, I feel its a life long project.

I work out alone. I plug myself into my MD walkman and I'm good to go. 100% focus, only peek up to check out a honey in her lycra.

I've noticed guys training at my gym together spend more time talking than they do lifiting. I'd hate to have a lifting partner who wanted to chat about this and that. Just shut up and lift I'd tell him. Which may come across rude. Maybe that's why I got no training partner....!

I work out at home, alone. I prefer it that way. Mostly for a lot of the same reasons that have already been mentioned. I do, however, miss out on getting those last couple reps past failure. For now, I lift until I know that was the last rep. If I happen to push it beyond, and get stuck, usually twisting, turning and arching gets it back to the rack. I just don't count that as a rep.

Mainly, I do dumbelss when I bench, and Smith Machine after that. Hammer Strength machines are great. I've been training alone for as long as I can think of. Sometimes need a spotter when I DB military press.

I've had training partners they talk too much, that is one reason you see alot guys at the gym for 3 hours. I have trainer but he only comes to check up on me twice a week. I hate put that talk your ear out when you are trying to train. If i need a spot for any excersise i find the dorkiest looking guy in the gym that might be intimidated by me ask him for a spot, that way after he spots me he goes about his business.

I never workout with a partner. I get a better workout alone. If I'm going heavy and need a spot I'll ask someone, or do it on the smith machine or hammer strength. :)

Working out alone removes unneeded rest between sets, bullshit socialization, and allows for a better focus. Plus, no one in my gym can keep up with my routine or the weight I use. I had a partner for the first three years I worked out - since then, d-bells, smith machines and hack squats have done the trick.

The only thing guys who workout alone have to worry about is those guys that think that you are the bigest guy in the world and want to interupt you all the time. with stupid questions and to spot them Bench Press 40lb Dumbells. or the exact opposite the idoit that can bench press 250lb and tries to do 315lb. with your help of course.

Ditto!!

I don't mean to be rude, but when a woman is in the middle of a heavy squat or press she does NOT want to be asked about her weekend. Most people see your gym face and will leave you alone but every now again one of those annoying little gym rats must push the envelope.

I just ask one of the guys to spot me on heavy days.

same here... at 5 am i can not find anyone that goes as regularly as
I do...

as for a spot... there is always a few huge guys there in the morning
that work there that are glad to help out.
