Work is effecting workouts. Advice needed?

I recently started a new job. I am suppose to be a marketing intern, but I am more like the company's rented mule. Anyways, i am currently on a 5x3. I had to take last week off as I was to tired to lift. I want to go back to a 3x5 next week as I believe it is much easier on the body. My friend, BLKWS6 suggested maybe trying HST, as it may be easier on the body. I really don't know as I am not really familar with this style of training. I was wondering if guys had any opinions on this or could suggest some other ideas to help me out? Thanks a lot.

For the record: I don't think it will be "easier" it is just something I have been thinking about trying and Im going to go ahead and do so. The frequency is much greater then what me and Ruspa have been accustomed to but the volume per session is lower and the amount of time in the gym is decreased. I have just started researching HST and with the help of Casual I hope to get a program going for myself and see how it goes.

Go to the gym BEFORE work. That is the only way to work a heavy job and not be too tired to hit your workouts.

good advice...you will also feel better and have more energy that way...you won't be dragging to the gym, and you will probably sleep better.

I would alter your daily routine so you can train before you go to work, with as much food and water in you as you can manage.

I love being a student, and I will continue loving it for the next four years. No matter how busy I am with coursework, exams, or my job, I've got that element of flexibility that ensures I can always train somehow.

I've done higher volume failure training before, HST is definitely easier. It almost feels like cheating, how much growth I get for how little effort.

I would have to go lift at 6:30 AM in order to get work. There is no way that I could do that. I may just have to bump up my carbs.

Trivia to add to this:

Arnold works out at 5:30am in the morning. I know many regular people who came to know him... and train with him... simply because they went to World Gym at 5:00am and became part of the morning crew.

I had the good fortune to work ut with many of the great legends of bodybuilding. Why? Simple - my wife and I were both TV producers. She had to be to work by 9:00am... so many a morning we were in the gym at 5:00am to train... and that is when MOST of the old timers work out.

Arnold once said that people who stick with training go the first thing in the morning. They make working out a priority.

There are a few pros that I met who went late in the day... very few. By being part of the morning crew at Gold's Venice I met everybody who was worth knowing. I met guys who were lifting on Muscle Beach in the '40s and were still going to the gym.

I agree, get off your lazy ass Ruspa! ;)

I never work out early in the AM, and I'm beginning a new, stressful job in a week. If I begin working out at 6:30 before I go in to work at 8:30am, what do you eat before a weight training workout that early in the AM?

I agree, training in the morning before the day starts is a great way to energize your body. You feel great throughout the day and when you go home all you have to do is rest and eat!

dont eat before, youll be burning nothing but fat for energy, then have a good meal after.

I get up at 5:45 am to go workout. Otherwise there's just no way I could go after work. I'm too tired and hungry and it burns the whole evening (plus the gym is way more crowded).

Morning workouts are great - the only drawback is you can't really eat much beforehand.

Thats bad advice on several different levels. Eat before you train. How much depends on your stomach. Now, am cardio may be a different thing.

My problem is that in the morning I just have no energy. Even if I lift in the early afternoon I am weaker then I would be in the evening. Anyways, it seems like my internship is moving more towards the business side now and the first week was extra physical since I didnt know to much so they just made me move stuff around. As far as eating goes I never eat big before training, but I like to have a meal a few hours before and then like and apple and protein shake about 30 minutes before I train

RusP, I have been there, the first few weeks of a new routine or schedule are always hard, especially if you are new to doing physical work and a full hours (and then some). However, give your body a chance to adapt and get used to your new lifestyle and you should find that you get your energy back for evening workouts. At the end of the day it’s an office job. Plenty of people have far more physically demanding jobs like labouring, landscaping etc. and manage to get a good evening workout in.

Make sure you are eating consistently during the day. I find MRP shakes and sandwiches the way to go in the office, since it’s a bit easier to get these down quickly during the day while not disturbing your co-workers. Also drink a lot of water, that office air conditioning will take it out of you otherwise.

I understand the concept of not eating before doing cardio, but I would not be able to lift on an empty stomach! How soon should I eat before working out in the morning, and what should it consist of?
