Wireless router help someone, please.

Guys, I just installed a Linksys for our home network and it detected our cable modem immediately, but the signal strength shows only 39%. As expected the download rate is horrible. It's slower than dialup.

Any suggestions, please?

hey willow what Gigahertz is your phone? that can get in the way. make sure u have microfilters on your phone jacks also. make sure ur modem is central in your house also

I thought you were on dailup?

Anyhow.... The signal strength is for the wireless connection piece, not the cable connection. 39%, while low, should not degrade your download speeds. What was your cable speed supposed to be?

how far away is your computer from the wireless router? is it going through a bunch of walls?

A microwave operating will interfere with the signal, as will a 2.4ghz cordless phone and walls. You might try elevating your wireless router as high as possible; point the antenna straight up; moving the PC closer if possible or getting a signal booster/range extender.

if they have cable, there is no need for filters, yes a cordless phone and microwaves can interfere, but only while operating

good ideas guys, thanks. :):)

Jnuts, we just got the service this morning. I installed the wireless router on the 2nd computer to pick up the signal from the modem the cable dude installed in the other room.

Wootoom, I dont know. It's a bunch gigahertz though. No one was using it I'm sure. Omg if the signal get's even worse with the phone in use, the 2nd comp wouldnt be worth using.

Lestat, one of the walls is cinderblock. The 2nd computer is in a room that used to be a garage at one point in the house's history, so all four walls are cinderblock. Is it the brick wall that's screwing this up? Could I get some USB extensions and run the router over the maybe the window sill? Would that help?

I got this bi directional cable amplifier from Radio Shack. It it's a splitter/amplifier. They have a cheaper version that is just an amplifier. That may help.

walls are your enemies, specially real walls (not the drywall type). as said before: move it up, move the antenna this was or the other, if you can hook up an external antenna, you may need a directional one

supposedly this model has a signal amp built in though.

Ok, I used a USB with a female end to act as an extension to the USB cord that came with the unit. I was able to stretch the router out just around the doorjamb and stick it on the wall in the hallway. So the cinderblock walls shouldnt be an issue anymore. Still though the signal is only 40%. WTF Yo!?

I'm poor, I'm Mexican, and I am but a woman you see. Help?

lolol

home rig an antenna with a Pringles can

Your signal shouldn't be that bad. It's just on the second computer? It has built in wireless? You should get alot better then 39%. I get like 85-89% in the basement of a brickhouse with the router 100 feet away upstairs. I have never had that sort of a problem...I don't have a clue. Sorry I couldn't help.

No it's a Linksys router I just installed.

Yeah I dont get it either. This blows burro penis.

Is it lightning fast if the computer with adapter is right next to the router?

If you plug computer in directly to modem -- it's lightning fast?

Is it 802.11g?

Have you taken router and 1 adapter to another friend's house and installed it there?

That's odd. That's what I use btw and those things shouldn't interfer with anything. odd.
