Windows ME, 2000, or XP?? Advice needed...

Hey, for home personal bullshit computing, which OS is the best: ME, 2000, XP, XP Pro? I do not run any graphics programs, so it's just basic computing I guess. I am not paying for anything (well not much at least), so don't have price as a factor in your decision.

I don't understand something though.....Is XP an OS by itself, or is it an upgrade for other windows OS?

Thanks

XP is full OS based on Windows 2000.

I'd personally take Win2k cause it's super stable, but you need a pretty decent computer for it and it's overkill for most casual users. I think you're looking for Windows ME.

I've run all them and here's my advice. Windows 98se is ok, Windows ME is totally worthless, Windows 2000 is awesome but has alot of features that the casual user won't use and its $$$$ so that leaves us with Windows XP. I've had it for awhile and it rocks

Damn you guys are quick.....

It's going to be on a computer that I am having built, and also a laptop of mine that is a PII Compaq Armada.

Is there any place I can upgrade the processor in this laptop for cheap? Or does that include switching out the system and mother board, etc...?

ebay. you can sell your old processor, then buy a newer one on ebay or pricewatch.com

new processors usually require new motherboards too. and new ram sometimes.

Ok, so since money isn't the object, does that mean I go with Win 2000 Pro? Or XP Pro?

ME is shit....

2000 is very stable but sucks for some games.

XP ? Well get the pro version since you dont need to register. Probably the best ever released by Microsoft. But i still believe Mac OS X and Red Hat Linux are far superior OS......

XP is trash. If you want something on the higher end get Win2k. There have been many tests showing that XP is slower than Win2k, not to mention that Win2k has been around a lot longer and has some of the more serious bugs pathced. Also MS makes you register WinXP before you can use it, and your copy will be locked to that computer. If you change your hardware or get a new computer you gotta call MS again to get a new serial #.

Yeah... Buy a G4 and pay an extra $2500 for it compared to the prices of a P4 or Athlon... Apple's prices are nuts.

That extra money pays for your admittance into the Apple Cult, which I am a proud card carrying member of.

..

What does "if your PC can run it", and "if your hardware can run it" mean?

My new machine is going to be a P4 with a ton of RAM, but my little ol laptop is only P2 with 192 RAM.

I am thinking the consensus is XP pro or 2000 Pro. Right? Can it run on those machines listed above?

stick with 98 se if you want basic features with no problems. I love this OS, if I knew how to properly use linux I would. XP is ok so far for me, which is what I am running. but 98 se has my solid vote, then 2000 pro, then xp
