Wild Game and A Clean Diet??

Raina

Banned
I know that cold water fish, chicken, and turkey are high protein and low fat. I was wondering about game. I know that bison and moose are both really high protein and very low fat-- what about venison, bear etc (not game birds as they're not something I like...plus they're greasy), but dovenison, bison, and moose fit into a clean diet??

I have a lot of access to game and I have always heard that a lot of it is better for the body than low-fat cuts of beef. I don't think that's bear's all that healthy but I had that for dinner anyhow. It's SUCH a treat!! Just wondering as this is something I haven't seen much about and I enjoy a lot. Opinions??

Thanks.

Kate

i dont see why or how it could be bad.
i wish i had access to even a fraction of what u do. its hard to come by in the sunshine state and i sure do miss it.
oh well, im looking forward to this weekend, im hangin out w/ some redneck friends and there promising me we'll be having a hog for dinner.
so i have no proof or numbers, but i'd say eat it up and enjoy

Thanks. Game is pretty damn easy to get when your family, friends, and coworkers all hunt. Yeah for living in MN. I checked out fitday.com with some of the portions of what I was eating today and it all seemed fine?? Once again though, any specifics would be welcome!!!

I'm thinking it would be really good since it's organic?? For the most part at least. It's not like a deer in the woods is getting shots and is being fed certain "feeds". I don't know...just seems like something I should take advantage of if I can get it-- especially when it will be free. If people are offering me pounds and pounds of fresh lean meat, it seems like a good idea-- I just want to know for sure before filling my freezer with game.

Pig roasts are wonderful...maybe not the epitome of health, but damn do they taste good. :D

If you have access to game meats then definitely eat it. It's superior to supermarket meats in every way. It's leaner b/c it wasn't fed grain to make it fatter, hasn't been injected with hormones to make it larger, wasn't given antibiotics (70% of antibiotics make in the US are used given to cattle), isn't fed grain so it's fatty acid ratio is superior, it naturally has a high Omega-3 content as apposed to commercial beef, and actually has a lot of CLA as well. I'm going to start hunting next year and I can't wait to be able to eat fresh untainted meat. Your lucky to have access to these types of foods.

Without a doubt, lean, fresh game is good food. The lean goes without saying (if it's truly wild). Compared to USDA cuts, fresh wild (or ferrell if ya wanna eat Catalina buffalo) game is superior to commercial slaughterhouse meats in most respects.

I'm fortunate enough(well, take it for what it's worth :) ) to live in Kentucky and am able to hunt a lot. Yes, I wear shoes, and I'm not a TOTAL redneck anyways. Venison is the best damn thing you can eat when on a cutting diet(besides maybe tuna). It has half the fat of chicken and 1.5 X the amount of protein in it. Another good choice for a lean game recipe is duck. Although it has a little more fat than venison, it is still fairly lean. Goose, on the other hand, has about double the fat of duck, so I would stay away from it. Also, wild turkey is very good for you, as well as dove, quail, and rabbit. Granted, some of the animals(namely, rabbit and goose) will taste like absolute shit unless you cook them right. Generally, the best way to cook any of the above meats is marinade them in a soy sauce-based marinade. I realze that this adds sodium, but how in the hell is it supposed to taste good since it's so damn healthy. The marinade I generally use consists of soy sauce, honey, lemon pepper, garlic, and maybe a little tobasco. Marinade overnight and throw them on the grill-YUMMY! They'll be a lot less tough and the "gamey" taste will be gone. Another good recipe is deer ribs. Put them in the crock pot with barbecue sauce and you wouldn't believe how good they are. Happy eating!

I have heard wild game is very lean...I have a freezer FULL of deer meat. We always have at least 2 deer in the freezer...one mine, one the b/f...so if it's as lean as they say, HOOOORRRAAYYYY....I am totally set..:) He duck hunts a lot too, but i DO NOT like duck...so that's outta' the question.
