Why only deadlift once a week?

I've noticed in nearly all of the 5x5 programs deadlifting is relegated to once a week, can someone please explain why? Surely its a good idea to get 2x a week at least?

deadlifts are most taxing for CNS. Theres PL'ers out there who only DL once every two weeks, but Iv heard of old russian weightlifters deadlifting 3 times a week...
 
if you are truly deadlifting with the utmost intensity you will eventualy become overly exhausted.... the exception might be beginning lifters or lifters new to the deadlift...

But I've done a deadlift 2x a week and an OLY pull 1-2x per week for long periods. All at moderate weight and INTENSITY though.
 
I give this 2-3 months until you are back here with what amount to symptoms of over training.

DL 1x/week. If you want to kick it up a notch, C&P another day too.

But your CNS will eventually give you diminishing returns for putting it through all of that training - assuming that you are going hard and heavy.
