Why get a Marriage License!?!

I have often wondered this, Why should you have to get a liscense to get married?? Well you don't have to. Who should you? Go to the church, get married live your life. After all isn't it the minister, priest, or judge that declares a person married?? Or isn't it "in god's eye" that you are married?

Did people go to their gov. back in the day and get permission to get married, NO, they didn't. Is this sucha free nation that you have to get permission to marry the one you love??

THink about this, you go get a marriage liscense, it is now wedding day, they both say I do, or I will, whatever, and boom they are married. So is it the church that has the final say?? If that is the case, why do you have to go to court to get divorced, an not just the church?

Here is a better idea, set a wedding day, DON'T get a marriage liscense and have you wedding, and BOOM, you are done. If the wife wants her last name to be that of her husbands, she can go get it changed, no problem. So what is different with these two scenarios, nothing at all, but one of them is legal.

If the two want to seperate, they can go their own way, no court fee's nothing. Plus, this way, the man doesn't have to worry about the wife ripping him off from all of his money, that she doesn't deserve.

OH, but what about kids, there is a thing called child support, people have to pay it all the time, all you have to do is prove that it is the man's child, or vice versa.

Now I don't know all the specifics of this topic, I don't want to sound like I do either, so if anyone has any arguments, or answers to this question, I am all ears.

No flames please, I am serious, I would like to know why we can't, or don't, go get "married" without the government's permission.

After all, isn't it about the love of TWO people? And not that of the Gov.'s

I know a lot of couples whose attitudes are "we don't want kids so why get married?"

Somehow that makes sense and even if you aren't legal married to someone they can still take 50% because of co-habitation laws.

I am pretty shure that there aren't any co-habitation laws here in IL, I don't know for shure though.

But lets use that, so why not just go and live together then? Have hers, or his name changed, boom, a couple. If the state says that you are a husband and wife after so many years, why bother with the marriage liscense?

Serious, I don't know how they do it, can anyone shed some light? Hell why not have the traditional wedding outside, and have your parents declare your marriage, I would rather have my parents and soon to be in-laws say I am married than my government.

And no I am not against our gov. I just don't like some of "their" laws

i got married in vegas by some minister dude.. i'd much rather have had a justice of the peace or whoever those secular folk are that marry people...

anywho.. i told the silly bastard that he's to make absolutely NO reference to any religious writings or of any religious nature or to any god or any of that other crapola..

ha, change her!! A good friend of mine, Lori, used to be Catholic, she is now Pentecostal, pisses me off.

I think this guy brain washed her, serious. HEr whole family is mad, she used to get dresses up looked real good too, now, no makeup, a skirt all the time, no longer drinks or goes out with friends.

If she can change, anyone can, she used to be a strict catholic too

why should she get anything? Most women work these days. The times are changing. Spousal support is needed as much now. Granted, when children are involved, that's a different story, but you still don't need a marriage license for child support.

Why does one need a license to get married?

To make sure she isn't your cousin.

It used to be that you just needed parental consent to get married but that was eventually passed on over to the state with each one having their own rules and regs on the matter. Most states you need to be 18. However, if you are in Missouri you can get hitched if you are under 15 if you have parental and a judges consent. Guess there wouldn't be much of a problem deciding who get's to sit at the kids table at that reception. Some states used marriage licenses as a way of preventing interracial marriages.

Today, it is just as meaningful as a fishing license. Although some states will press the fact that because you had to ask them for permission, via a marriage license, that you have given them the right to oversee aspects of your life they would not normally control.

I know a couple who are not married and have a child and have no immediate plans on getting married. They are quite happy and don't seem to have any problems with day to day events. Guess you just have to go with what feels right for you.

Think of it this way: 40 bucks to get laid is a pretty good deal.

A marriage license LEGALLY insures you as your spouse's next of kin and therefore have rights to property, death benefits, and pertinent decisions regaurding the care of your spouse in the event he/she can no longer make those decisions for him/herself. ie. living wills, organ donation, etc.
