Hollywood actress warns US against war on Iraq
The Independent (UK) ^ | 17 August 2002 | Louise Jury

The Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon said yesterday that attacking Iraq was no solution to the terrorist attacks on the United States last year.

The Oscar-winning star of the film Dead Man Walking spoke out at the Edinburgh Festival, where she has been appearing with her husband, Tim Robbins, in a reading of a play about a firefighter caught in the events of 11 September.

Asked what she thought about President George Bush's plans to attack Iraq, Sarandon said she would not want America to go to war. "I don't think a military expansion of violence is the solution. First we have to ask the right questions and then you come up with a solution. I don't think we've yet formed the right questions. I still think they're trying to define who the enemy is."

The couple, who are known for their humanitarian views and support for left-wing causes, performed their final reading of The Guys by Anne Nelson at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh last night. They will present further readings at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin next week, where they expect the play to have special resonance because of the number of Irish people with relatives in the New York fire service. The work is based on a true story of how Nelson, a journalism lecturer, helped a fire captain compose eulogies for colleagues killed when the twin towers collapsed.

Sarandon and Robbins first performed the work in New York where they both live. It was originally staged with Sigourney Weaver, who is now starring in a film version, and Bill Murray.

The actress admitted that before the attacks most Americans had been protected from the kind of "inexplicable terrorist violence" experienced by many other countries. "The first thing I said to my children was, 'We have joined the rest of the world now'," she said.

Who gives a flying fuck what some has-been actress thinks?!

depends.....does she get involved and comment on these things, and is she head of any charities etc?

otherwise no i dont see why it makes the news. other than its a good way of presenting an opposing arguement to the governments thoughts on the matter and its from the mouth of someone people will recognise

maybe the new york times should get vanilla ice on the phone and ask him for his opinions on american relations with russia

Sounds like the reporter cared about what she thought......along with the producer and editor of the paper.

I don't think that is a fair comparison. Susan Sarandon publicly supports various organisations and is known for this.

Vanilla Ice wasa dumbass who had such a boring upbringing that he had to make his history up.

Not that I agree with her, but reporters from other countries tend to be objective, and won't give every story a US media slant.

I much rather listen to foreign news outlets (BBC).

what do you expect, since most europeans share the same sentiment as that has-been?

just another attempt to to dissaude the american public from wanting to go to war with iraq, by hollywood 'stars' as their mouth piece.

Remind me again why you want to go to war with Iraq.......

If you mention terrorism, please explain why you don't want war with Egypt, Saudi etc......who have stronger ties to terrorism than Iraq. I'd wager that the majority of the amercians that are looking for war only think its a good idea because (i) they know they will win, (ii) they all recignise the names of Saddam and Iraq and associate him with evil.

Had it occurred to you that those outside fo your country might have a point? (see comment on objective decisions in gymnpoppas post).

you're right, they are quite objective...that's why they get out of touch 'celebrities' such as susan sarandon, woody harrelson, and leonardo di caprio to blast america and bush every chance they get. i sure wish the wall street journal was objective like that and would get the fucking spice girls to comment on the political affairs.

HAHAHAHA...I think that the next article is going to be an op-ed by Mary Kate and Ashley.

Thats a bullshit comment if ever I heard one. I would wager that you put up that 'out of touch' comment whenever somebody disagrees with your ideals.

So how about you answer the question I asked in my last post now. Why do you want to fight Iraq in particular?? Why not Egypt or Saudi?

If I said that no one would of cared two shits. But because she said it, that's why the reporter and everyone else cared.

I thought Susan Sarandon was currently in Edinburgh performing a play at the festival - guess it must have been one of the productions that got cancelled...

You think that comment would have made it into broadsheet paper over here just because a celebrity said it? This isn't the Star or the Sun we are talking about.

However, Ithink that if all sides of the argument are not be voiced in public, then it would be a good move to use a person in the public eye to put alternative opinions forward. I think the public are too quick to assume the those in power are telling the truth and only doing things for the right reasons.

Interesting how the original poster is all for going after Iraq, but cant justify not going after Saudi or Egypt. That could be interpreted as him only knowing about what he sees on TV and reads.....so how can he be expected to form an opinion on a topic unless all sides of the argument are in the public eye??
