Why does my laptop take forever to load up?

would it be bc of all the windows xp hot fix's by chance?

55gb hard drive, 42g free

512mb memory

did it used to load faster? have you loaded many programs on your laptop in the past few months? do you have tons of anti spyware, anti virus programs loading in startup?

well i have spybot and adaware, but they dont load up on startup...at least i dont think so

also have norton 2002

Is this machine normally connected to a network? when yes, and you are loggin in OUTSIDE the network it will look for the Domain controllers to validate your password... there are some timers for this that need to expire before the machine decides to continue offline...

of course, you can tweak all this with the registry... there are so many things that need to be done to a fresh vanilla installation to make it decent.

how large is you swap file, is anything in your startup file, when was the last time you defragged the hd, clean out your temp files, is ur norton current, run the anti spyware

yea, cleanup your startup folder, run disk cleanup, disk fragmenter, run MSCONFIG...go to STARTUP tab and uncheck any programs that you dont need to start up.

ran the degrag, cleanup and spyware last night... windows operates fine i guess its just the start up screen takes a good while (5+ mins on reboot)

theres a bunch of things checked on my mscongif>startup tab but i dont know what any of them are lol

not sure what a swap file is..

Start menu

Run

Type in MSconfig

Under the "General" tab, click "selective startup." That will help it load faster.

Under the "Startup" tab, look to see what's clicked. A lot of programs will try to fire up during startup. Under mine, it wanted to fire up Nero and 2 picture programs on startup that are unnecessary to have running constantly. You've got to figure out what programs it's trying to load at startup that you don't need. You really don't need many programs at startup.

And do some of the stuff these other guys are telling you to do too.

well i did everything u guys said i think... nothing really helped... grrrrrrrr

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html Go there, download the program. Restart the computer and don't do a single thing until AFTER you run that program. Save the log, copy/paste it here. Maybe there's something running that shouldn't be and you just aren't seeing it. That's about the best suggestion I can give you right now.

How fast is your processor? My laptop only has 256mb of RAM with a 2.4ghz P4 processor and it's slow IMO, but I'm also comparing it to my PC which has the same speed processor and 512mb of ram. 512mb is the least I'm comfortable running with XP. If I keep my laptop, it'll be getting a RAM upgrade, but even at 512mb I think it'll be slower than my PC, simply because the sound card and video card aren't as fast.

processor is 2.4ghz

thanks for the link i gotta jet here in a min but ill run it when i get back

Loading time more than often depends on the programs you have on your pc.
They load at startup.

If they necessarily have to load at startup, then usually it takes some time for your pc to recognize and get used to the programs. At least in my experience this is usually the case. For example, the 1st time and few other times after I had installed security software on my pc, it took longer for everything to load. Now it's all alot quicker.

If the slow loading time persists, ya might wanna look into tweaking your loadup settings. In other words, the most necessary programs can load at startup, while the others can load later on or manually.

Give it some time.
If it continues I can help ya w/ the tweaking.

Peace
