why does internet explorer save my image files as bmp and not jpeg??

What exact method are you using to save them?

Also, you should get a backup browser just in case your computer is crashing with one. Try Phoenix http://www.mozilla.org/projects/phoenix/phoenix-release-notes.html

I run into the same problem, especially when I'm trying to save a pic someone sends me via Hotmail. Jpegs, animated-gifs, etc... IE often tries to save them as a bmp.

Clear out your temporary internet files in IE. It's a known bug in IE. There is a Knowledge Base article on it, but I don't remember where it is.... (TOOLS-INTERNET OPTIONS-DELETE FILES)

i just email it to myself but dont send it. right click the attached pic descripiton in the attachment list, and save as...it will be saved as whatever file type it is. its a couple extra keystrokes.
