I don't like that answer. I have a better idea though. When a women gets married the husband chops her ring finger off to let everyone know she is taken.

I wore my grandma's wedding ring on my left middle finger for a long time. It often traveled over to my ring finger though. It's kind of the universal symbol for "leave me alone bastard".
you can never know which finger is the ring finger for a certain person. For me its the right one, not the left.
Btw - even when I was not married I wore rings wherever I wanted
