why do SLDLs 'work'?

to me, stiff-legged deads are just a hammy stretch with a barbell in your hands...

every other lift i think of is where a muscle pushes/pulls directly. i dont understand if/how this happens w/ hams in a SLDL

the hams cross the hip joint. so one of their "duties" is to extend the hip. ie pull yourself up when bent over, ie SL dead)

I've wondered the same thing. My hams never get anything from deadlifts whether it be stiff leg or regular. They kill my lower back though. Are you tall by chance? I'm 6'4" and i think that might have something to do with it.

All I know is my hams dont get sore without them. I do'm heavy for 6 reps at 315-350lbs. I strech them out till they feel like they gonna tear.

But if you stretch your hammys with "a barbell in your hands," how do you get back up with that "barbell in your hands?" All the individual muscles of the posterior chain (spinal erectors, glutes, hamstrings) are involved to some extent in getting you upright again. To what extent each of these muscles are involved can be an issue of mind and muscle connection. To some that comes more naturally than others like how some guys automatically use their biceps more heavily than their upper back muscles in pullups and rows at first. The SLDL movement is supposed to heavily work all the muscles of the posterior chain. Continue missing the mind and muscle connection with the glutes and hammys, and you'll find yourself hitting a plateau in the movement sooner than need be and may also increase your risk of injury to one of those muscles. Try this: when coming back up focus on driving your feet into the floor and back while squeezing your glutes.

Also, I too prefer Romanian Deadlifts for working these same muscles.

Thanks alot for the tip bro!! I tried this today while deadlifting and finally got my hams and glutes involved in the movement. If i knew how to give karma I'd hook you up man.:D :D :D

well, when you have over 300lbs in your hands you are using hams, ass, lower back, and traps. I say it is a great overall mass and strength developer.

yeah, sounds like it to me!

When you guys do SLDL, do you stand on some sort of incline? or just do them on the floor like regular DL's but keep your legs straight. For me doing it the latter way, doesn't do much, maybe because im so flexible? I dont know.

im verrrrrry flexible in my hams, gymnast flexible (almost)
you dont really need to stand on anything, unless you want to hit your low back more.

Ok, so would it be alright to throw in some SLDL's in the same workout that u do regular DL's? If so i guess ill give them another shot and see how they go

I stand on a six inch box/platform, just to keep the plates from hitting the floor.

I only do them on leg day after squats. I am ashamed to admit that i don't do regular deads.
