Why Do Range Rovers Cost So Dang Much?

curling

New member
90k? Are they crazy you can get a Porshe SUV for that much(which I think is a ripoff too) with more HP why do the Range Rovers cost so much?

good question. Status symbols? I personally think that people who have to have a fancy SUV as a status symbol even though they live in suburbia USA are annoying. I mean, since when must spoiled children have a playstation, movies and all their toys with them just to shut up and behave in the car? LOL. I mean isn't the purpose of SUV's for off-roading or tough terrains? Don't get me started. ;-)

The brand and maybe some interior luxury. You pay for a name because Range Rovers are fuckin unreliable. Agree with you, I'd so take a Cayenne before a Range Rover.

Range Rovers are too ugly and small for the high price.. I see alot of woman driving this trucks and I bet they will never go off-road. just a status symbol...

anything British is considered a status symbol on the east and west coast....in spite of their extreme (un)reliability. even 50 years later, the curse of Lucas electrics and british "craftsmanship" is still evident! :worried:

why anyone would pay Big Bucks for a vehicle that is not as reliable as a toyota or nissan is beyond me......

I see tons of middle aged trophy wives driving large expensive SUV's yacking on the phone while little Timmy and Melinda watch a dvd in the back seat.
Their 4X4 is shinny and clean and has never even been put in 4wheel drive.

They are usually riding in the passing lane at inconsistent speeds or tailgating cars.

I want to put a 9MM in their head.

Down here, we call these Never been off pavement vehicles

Pavement Princesses

I agree that they are way over priced for the components, capability and poor mechanical quality.

It's simply stating "I have a Range Rover just like the brits on african safari used to use". "What time is Soccer practice again" ?

I'd rather pay $45 and get a Toyo Land Cruiser or FJ Cruiser
or even $60 for a Hummer H1

They don't even ride that nicely. The later models are stiff, loud, and buzz inzide. Like the dash and shit are coming apart. The new ones may be nicer, I don't know anyone that has one. The new sport model is over $90K and is slower than a $65K Escalade.

Actually for off-roading & safety they rank pretty high compared to their competitors, I did a case on Land Rover North America.

The people who said Range Rovers are priced according to their perception as a status symbol is correct. The price created the status originally, and the status sustains the price.

Total status symbol..
Off roading? Infuriating freakin' nightmare watching them try to parallel park!

ha ha ha!!!! where are you going to get a new H1 alpha for 60K ?????? try 110K (if your lucky) You can get an old used up one for 60K probably beat to shit, and then you have the mechanical issues to deal with...

The rovers do have very good off road capabilities. I just wouldn't drop $85K on something that will get scratched to hell by rocks and branches.

buy a jeep

put a 350 in it.

beat it to shit.

I need a tank with my driving record... :worried:

I used to love the Discovery - I think they drive well.
I found a Freelander used for a sweet price not too long ago but I just hated the color.

I like them.

There's a tax incentive for vehicles over 6000lbs so a lot of people purchased them - that's why they are so many around.

By me the housewives drive the Range Rover and the gay guys drive the Sport (and guys from Jersey).

The LR3 is growing on me and the lease is great but I can't justify buying an SUV - I barely need a 4 door but the LR2 is coming so I may change my mind.

I was talking pre owned on the H1, yes..

Here are two nice 2003's in the 60's
http://www.lynchhummer.com/Pre-ownedpictures.html

Even an H2 would be better than a RR IMO for off roading capability..

1. Like others have said you're paying for the Land Rover name
2. Best luxury interior I know of

thats all i got

My gwagon would eat a range rover!

Rovers are pretty tough. The Touraeg and the 4runner are very impressive for the money and comfortable. I have a friend that got the V8 Touraeg, and he takes it camping all the time. He said it offroads great. The electrical system is shit and it's had a ton of annoying little expensive things go wrong, but he said it gets up everything and never gets high centered or stuck.

Buying used is sketchy, we have done both. I had a 1996, I bought used, but I also bought a 2 year warranty for an additional 5K... and I sure did use it, it was at the dealer at LEAST once a month, CTIS hoses, electrical probs, ended up changing the transmission..... yikes! After the warranty expired, I sold it. It was great for sand and mud, super fun. We beat the crap outaa that one. The new one we kept, because we know it inside and out. But that much money for a used box of "you dont know what you'll get" is really a risk. Added with it in the shop all the time is a drag... when you pull up it's all over the service advisors face.. "now what?" lol.
The H2 does well off road, had one of those too... really good in snow. traded it in for a smaller suv after it started to have problems, transmission also.

Agreed that buying anything used without knowing what to look for or look at
can be bad, especially with a truck or 4x4.

Hence, Most people that don't know what to look for buy new
or get screwed.

That white 2003 H1 with the loaded out leather looked real nice on the outside.
You would need to verify the suspension components mostly and look for water
damage, even though those things sometimes have a snorkel

After having many, I would buy newer used... (no choice now, rip H1) with a nice interior (but you can modify interior) and no rust, and no frame damage. everything else is gonna break or wear out at some point or another. everytime you take one out, you expect something is gonna go, it only happens maybe 1 out of 10 trips, but if you look at it that way at least your not let down. F'ing front breaks alone are 1200... one tire is 1100..
I have an alpha for a daily use car, that I love. I don't go far in it, but with the lame ass drivers around here, at least my kids are safe. that car has proven to be very dependable so far, but once we start to take that one off road, it will have probs too.
If you can find one that has been garage kept, with low miles, yay. Don't be fooled if the owner was "an old man"... those guys are the worst. They totally beat the crap out of them.

RR def have serious offroad capabilities. when i had mine there were all these local meets that the dealer would organize and all the owners would take their trucks offroading thru water, trails, etc. theres a bunch of videos on what they can do:

http://youtube.com/results?search_query=range+rover

but too many problems with the suspension air bags busting is while ill never go near one again

yep, myway and caligirl come to mind.
both drive big ass trucks, both live in the city, both don't tow a damn thing.
fucking shaem

I see, only a redneck that tows shit can own a truck. No just buying a car because you like it, it needs function. Sounds like caligirl rallies her trucks, btw.

never saw the point in owning a truck if you don't use it for what it's made for.
poser'ish, trying to be a tough guy/gal

Lol. That's about as highschool as anything I've ever heard.

again i say.............to spend Big Bucks for a rugged off road vehicle and have to suffer with all the electrical and mechanical gremlims that LR'S foist off on the unsuspecting american buying public......what's wrong with buying a well built, reliable toyota/lexus?

according to JD power, toyota is leading the industry in recalls right now.
might want to rethink things

How? And lol at the bumpkin that doesn't realize that a city person can pull a boat to the mtns or may want 4wd to go up canyons to ski. It's got nothing to do with wanting to look country for most. I doubt they'd want people to think they're simpletons.

well then their you go, if you have something to tow makes sense to have a vehicle that can do it.
i'm just sick of fatty detroit vacationing peeps with their suvs and disregard for others while driving
lol @ buying 4wd for a once a yr ski trip.
i don't like having to have a 4wd...costs a lot, makes the veh heavier, reduces economy. but it is a necessity for my locale. i don't understand why you would want it if you don't require it

Well, here the ski hills are 25 minutes away from downtown Salt Lake. definitely different from the Jersey family trip to Killington once a year. It is odd how many people have an F-350 all titsed out with a lift and all that shit, but won'y pull or haul anything because they don't want it scratched. I look at people that own fast cars but drive them slow the same way.

Toyota is moving from Japan and US assembly plants to 3rd world Asian countries, Malaysia etc,
hence the recent drop in quality for some of their vehicles.

Because people will pay it. SUV's just don't cost enough. It's a status thing. That's the king of expensive SUV's I think. I drive cars so I don't know for sure.

according to JD power and MILLIONS of satisfied owners; toyota/lexus makes the highest quality vehicles. period. for YEARS.

your line of "reasoning" is akin to condemming a blue chip stock because of a temporary blip in the stock market.

Just a thought

A Chevy Suburban is 40k+
A Toyota Land Cruiser is 56k +
A Lexus LX is 68+
A Range Rover is 75+

Is it really that different?

Of course you are paying for status.... so you can drop the Toyota and the Chevy and add a Benz and a BMW

BMW x5 4.8 71k+
BENZ GL 55k +
A Lexus LX is 68+
A Range Rover is 75+

It's just perspective.

I have had two landcruisers and a truck. I loved all three. Toyota is great. I also had a 72' bronco that I loved....it took a serious beating loved to play in the mud with that one!
We just graduated to a different car, thats all.

Jnevin,
yeah, we actually use ours, 3 and 4 day trips into nowhere. Our Open Top, the one we beat up, has huge deep scratches and some nice dents, we had to take off the alloys and go to the old style rims because they got trashed easily, only drawbackis the ctis is flapping in the breeze.. but oh well.

Cause warranty expires and after 40k-50k miles you're car turns into a cry baby. On top of that it starts leaking oil like there's no tommorow

GM lost billions last year due to recalls

its cutting into profits immensly

Laying off workers and closing plants is not a solution to reliability problems.

Most japanese car manufacturers have excellent product reliability in the US because this is where they send the cream of the crop - they realize the US market is their selling point and they adjust accordingly.

# of recalls does not correlate to reliability in any way.

It's more an indicator of poor design...

But Poor design habits can lead to lower reliability..
Vicious circle..

Also keep in mind that Toyota has become the #2 in volume sales.
So a higher number of vehicles may mean an increase in number of recalls but the same if not lower percentage of the whole.

It can also mean that the manufacturer has a very cautious legal department.

All designs have correctible flaws. Do you really feel more confident with a manufacturer who fails to acknowledge or correct them?

Did Brad Pitt juice for Fight Club?

Would you rather be from some terrible place, or presently be suffering from a small wound?

I'd take a jeep over a range/land rover any day.

more like buying a cadillac if you can get the same quality as buying a chev tahoe.

I just dont get why people spend so much money on cars that's not even worth it. They probably buy these High price cars because they think it makes them look cool and just basically to show off!!!

some of us buy vehicles to please us.
