Why do people worship sports players?

I can understand it on a very basic level “he/she’s my favorite player, and it ends there.

What I don’t understand is watching every game, knowing all statistics, knowing everything about the person, paying ridicules prices for tickets so the people can live in million dollar crib style homes and have 20 vehicles.

The majorities of people that go to games are middle class to poverty and support these players’ lavish lifestyles by doing so.

I had a friend who watched espn all day and would memorize player’s stats from every kind of sport there is, would get season tickets to every sport, and probably knew more about players than his own kids, he could probably buy a new car every year rather than spend all that money on sports.

If you’re not rich why would you willingly give money to the rich for any form of entertainment?

My thing is white guys worshiping black basketball players, you give them money so they can live like kings, and in reality they hate you and would never want to be you’re friend outside of the sport.

Anytime I someone asks me if I want to go to a game cribs pops in my head and it makes me not want to go. basketball, baseball and football. THEY GET PAID TOO MUCH!!!

people are built to align themselves with other people to form a social group that then becomes part of themselves. idolation is a bit like that - they associate the player with themselves and, because they cant interact with them in real life, kinda stalk them. i read a bunch about it a year ago but its hazy now

these guys generate billions of dollars, they deserve to get paid millions. I don't agree with some of the newer contracts (especially the long term guaranteed ones where they end up injured or sitting on their ass for 2-3 years), but considering the amount of revenue generated they deserve it.
lets say you had a job, and you alone were responsible for hundred of millions of dollars a year of revenue. you don't think you'd be compensated EXTREMELY well for that?

bottom line..with sports and athletes, its several things.

- they're the best in the world. if you have any respect for athletic ability or skill what some of these guys do is amazing. Out of millions of people who play, these guys are the elite. The top .00001% percentile of any field is gonna be making some serious cash no matter what industry
- it's entertainment and extremely competitive. it's a live, unpredictable male soap opera basically. has its own story lines, etc.
-it allows people to live vicariously through other people.
- there is alot of comraderie and city/local pride associated with sports teams. look at soccer. their national soccer teams are like oxygen to them. half of sports arguments are "my team is better than your team"..why? because it usually represents them and their city.

pretty much sums it up. i don't think anyone should "worship" somebody because for many, these guys are idiots outside of their athletic ability. But knowing stats and keeping track of players is just part of following sports. I follow certain players very closely but i'm just an avid sports fan in general, so i know alot of statistics.

people worship celebs as well, which is another stupidity. but it stems from wanting to be somebody else in the spotlight

I never understood this. I could admire but never put them above myself. Instead of trying to be like someone else you should put yourself in that place, then you'll become what you've always wanted to be...a STAR!!! You can become great, if you self motivate yourself, push much more harder then the next guy, and want it that much more then anyone else. I look up to myself. Always confident in what my abilities and strengths are. Don't get me wrong nothing wrong with recongizing others accomplishments...never make or put above yourself...just don't. There human just like us.

But then when you look at the big picture prob 90% of people watching sports prob never play sports , but wanted to so they can kinda live out their fantasies by rooting on their fav male hero in the sport. In a way wishing it was them on the feild .

I knew from the second I watch canseco break a baseball bat over his knee and yell muther fucker then stomp off the field like a giant cry baby back in 95 , I wanted to be on steroids ! and be just like my sports heros it was amazing to see my hero become a raging lunatic. LOL
