A mother found her three children murdered in their family's mobile home in Merritt yesterday afternoon.
Neighbour Steve Papove said he overheard police-scanner reports confirming that a man killed the children and took his own life.
"We heard it was three kids and himself," said Papove.
Police cordon off a mobile home in Merritt after three children were reportedly found dead.
We heard there's four deaths in the trailer and he's in there."
Papove said he did not know whether the killer was the father of the children.
RCMP Cpl. Tracy Dunmore confirmed three young children were found murdered in their home.
Dunmore said no arrests were made and police were not searching for a suspect.
"Neighbours saw the woman who lives in this mobile home walking to the store," CJNL radio reporter Andrew Hopkins told The Province.
"She came back from the store and within five minutes [neighbours] say four cop cars came screaming around the corner to the front of the home. They then saw the woman distraught leaving the home and the police escorted her to an ambulance."
Police were called to the home in the 2900-block Telemon Place by the mom at 2 p.m. yesterday.
"Our preliminary investigation suggests that this is not a random act," said RCMP Const. Annie Linteau.
Linteau said Merritt RCMP and members of the Southeast District Major Crime Unit were at the scene investigating the incident.
Hopkins said neighbours told him the family moved into the mobile home three or four months ago.
"She has three kids between six and 10, two boys, one girl. They would see her take the kids to and from school," Hopkins said.
Neighbours also told him that, within the past two weeks, a man moved into the mobile home.
"They saw the fellow who was living at the home in the park across the way flying a kite, so there was some involvement between the man and the kids."
The mom is aged between 35 and 40, said neighbours.
Gordon Comeau, chairman of the Nicola-Similkameen School Board, confirmed all three children attended school in Merritt in kindergarten and grades 2 and 4.
He would not name the school.
"They were known at the school and the parents were known as well," Comeau said.
"The father had been to the school [as a parent]. The principal knew who he was."
Comeau said the school will be closed today and grief counsellors will be available.
"Young kids tend to really feel this quite badly. They were well known within the school and it's a small community. It's hard on the kids. They develop friendships fairly quickly."

Merritt is a town of 7,000 located 90 kilometres south of Kamloops. It is best known as the host of the annual Merritt Mountain Music Festival.
