Why did people stick around New Orleans?

A sort of civil variation on Fast Twitch Fiber's thread.

Honestly, this "phenomenon" (for lack of a better word) has interested me for a while. After every natural disaster in recent times you always read/hear stories of people sticking around after they have been warned hundreds of times that bad shit is going to go down.

Now, in the case of N.O., you had busses going and picking up anybody who wanted out but didnt have the means to. This includes the old, the poor, and people that voted for Kerry. There was also refuge in the Superdome, various hotels, etc.

So, why did so many folks stick around? All I know if it was my wife and I, I would have gotten my gun, some cash, our pets / pictures / my EF password, and gotten the hell out of dodge as soon as possible. Whats the deal?

the belief "nothing bad ever happens to me"

sadly bad things do happen to good people

Poor people can't just drive away and get a Hotel. Many don't have cars or money. Old people tend to not know what's going on and if no one is looking out for them, their probably not going any where. There"s two examples.

True that. One time I put my shirt on inside out and didnt notice until I tried to button it up. That was a bad week.

However, there has to be more than this. Religion? Laziness?

The city and county sent teams of buses around for 24-48 hours picking every everybody who needed it and got them somewhere safe.

Indeed. Free pickup from wherever you lived and transportation to the Dome.

imsad to see what happened to the ones that died and their loved ones but shit i ask myself the same question.. why didn't you leave? it's not like it was a surprise u had like 8 days of warning

I didn't know about the buses, that's a good thing for the city to have done.

I read that helicopters were rescuing people from rooftops and trees today but before they actually threw them a line to save them they threw them beads and made them show them their tits! way to care on the tradition during all scenarios NO!!

from what I see of the video of the aftermath
not many white people survived the event

" we rescued a 450lb women who recently had had major surgery"
dude was " we were able to bring her to safety w/o disrupting any of her stitches"
I'm sure she is going to be disappointed with the new menu

If you made $8K or less a year and had no car could you have evacuated?

NO is one of the poorest cities in America and will soon be the poorest in the world.

Just think about all the nasty diseases that will be crawling about once they drain the city.

i dont know why they did it knowing the risks of staying behind.....of course i am saddened by what has happened but they should have listened when they were told to leave knowing that it could all flood now people have to bust their humps just to help save stranded roof top people....if they had listened they would be safe

Look, a lot of people won't heed the hype of the media on a hurricane because of how they cry wolf on each one. Until you've been through a upper CAT3 or bigger storm, you take a lot of it with a grain of salt. I'll evacuate any storm close to a CAT4 because I know what its like to cower in a closet while the freight train rolls around you for hours. These people haven't seen a major hurricane in 40 years.

Wodin has a point as well. Rather than sitting in a bleacher seat with no food and strangers all around, some of the poor would rather be home with thier families, where they have a support structure they can trust.

The only ones that stayed that I have no compassion for are the thrill-seeking hurricane partiers. A hurricane party is fine for a Cat1 (unless you live in a trailer) but otherwise get out, let the emergency workers do thier jobs.

Poverty, pride and denial is why people were sticking around. I wonder where the hell rnch is right now. I hope he left.

Some people were stuck waiting for someone to come and get them. Those that stayed are now just stuck there. that includes reporters.. etc etc.

Why did some chose to stay when they could have left? Call it ignorance I don't know. Every major hurricane to ever come close to NO has caused an evacuation. They knew eventually that this would happen. For years they warned and warned but nothing did happen.. maybe these people saw it as just another warning???

Some didn't take the seriousness of the sitation.. some had no idea, some were stranded with no transportation and some were just stubborn.

Geologists have been predicting for a long time that a cat 5 in New Orleans would be one of the costliest disasters in North America that has a high probability of happening. They were running possibly the most coordinated evacuation in history down there. Anyone who really wanted out could get out or at least get free shelter. Staying behind was a CHOICE. Also, the evacuation was MANDATORY. By the way, for all the people that are enjoying hating on me, I used to live in Florida. I've been through evacuations before.

I'm sorry but did anyone say they hated you on this thread.. I'm to lazy to go back and look.

I do recall you telling Hammy to more or less fuck off that he didn't know a damn thing about Hurricanes.

Hamsterfucker is still pissed at me because I called the cops on some crack dealers a month ago. I guess I hurt his business and he's holding a grudge.

no theres not more to it. nutsack put as simple as possible.

there are people who dont believe it will get as bad as the officials say it will. they either rode out previous hurricanes or abided by previous warnings and nothing happened.

they get complacent. comprehende'.

they did not have 8 days of warnings.

the storm did not make its northern turn or become cat4 until one or two days before impact. people who have lived on the gulf coast have been thru this a lot. its very easy to become complacent about warnings and tracking predictions.

Staying behind in an evacuated city offers certain opportunities...

When the waters subside, I bet they'll find hundreds, maybe thousands of dead people who were trapped in attics.

maybe some people had no where to go....all i know is i just got word that my best friends mom and step dad are missing and have not been found, i feel so bad.the thing that sucks the most is that she just started talking to her mother not too long ago!!!!!!! i have no idea what to say what can i do??? not really much i can say or do being here.......shit

Like a better opportunity to catch malaria.

guys aside from poverty, having lived thru many, many hurricanes etc..you really have to understand the culture and thinking here. i have lived in la. all my life and some of it in N.O. we are talking a differant animal. also understand that N.O. proper is extremely poor, on welfare or whatever..and as someone stated above, very few white people live in the city.
don't know if it will ever be the same..

Sorry..........but if I see a category 5 heading my way--fuk u im gone.

I do feel for them sure, but there was NO excuse for this.

Your below sea level, a 30' wall of water is heading towards you.

Do the math.

I heard on the radio in N.O. alone there could be as many as 100,000 dead. That can't be right. The city is like 500,000.

Not to mention the dreaded rear-admiral.

Most of the countries we help out hate us anyway, and have for many years.

Sometimes I dont know why we bother.
