Why are you not learning a martial art?

just curious to see why people dont take it up?

I started because i was paranoid about self defense. I stuck with it because now I love to compete.

thanks

because i get mad easy and i dont want to go to prison for murder

B/c I already have a black belt in unarmed combat and several years of training with weapons and in ground-fighting. I do kinda miss grappling, but there aren't any good classes around my college town :(

Id like to but there isn't much to offer around here that I know of plus Id honestly wanna get myself into shape for that kinda thing first. Hence my thread last week in the martial arts section

I did it for 7 years when I was younger and kind of burned out on it. I have pain in my hands, ankles, and knees now from it when it rains.

lol

This is the best post ever.................................EVER. :)

Hey... how many ninjas do you see with hot babes. uhh. NONE.

But everytime Ive seen a pirate he has a hot bar wench hanging on him. You get to sword fight, drink vast quantities of ale and not get fat.. free boat, cool hat.

and the free parrot that sits on your shoulder is damn hard to pass up.

all I get as a ninja.. is having some old guy beat on my abs with a stick and some sorry ass black pajamas.

YO HO HO A PIRATE'S LIFE FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because I have zero interest in martial arts or eastern philosophy.

I would be up for a beginner's class. I'm 39.

I think alot of people are confused by all the disciplines (?)

Is there just regular karate and no Brazilian/Congo/Tzu/Jeet/Crouching stuff?

The kids I know that do take it, I don't what the hell they're talking about....

There are a few things I've wished I'd taken up as a kid......this was one of them. Now I'm not as physically flexible as I used to be (can't do the splits to the floor, touch my shin to face standing, etc) and would have to spend most of my time just getting that far. As it is I have little spare time to devote even to my current hobbies.

Maybe later, when I can spend more time with it.

yeah its still out there. your best bet is to open the phone book and see whats local, then go check out a class or two and see how the instructor runs the classes. ask questions if you have them and see what you think. most instructors will offer you a free class or two.

btw i know a bunch of guys who started in there 40's and have stuck with martial arts and love it a good instructor will be able to pace the intensity properly for you. if you have any questions or if I can help let me know.

When I am not on the net, I am really Tony Jaa.

Wonder much to martial arts class cost anyway?

A lot more people have studied a "martial art" than realize it. If you've boxed or wrestled then you've trained in a martial art. People just think Asian when martial art's are mentioned even though Western martial art's pre-date Asian by several centuries.

Because I barely have enough time to go to the bathroom as it is.

because ive trained in the past, dont like the schools in the area, and have a black belt buddy who needs someone to hold pads and generally muck around with, who has teaching experience...so id rather train with him for a little while and see where it goes

It is stupid.
Why would you need it unless you get into fights in bars.
If you do that, you are loser.
do you really think thats why people train?

most people who train in any martial art NEVER start fights

I'd really like to, but I've just never gotten around to it. Which is a lousy excuse, I know.
My newest excuse is waiting for my buddy to start his own dojo. He's a Bujinkan black belt. I've tried that before, and liked it.
But at that point in my life (before I started lifting) I had no disipline, and didn't have any motivation to do anything related to excersice.

Another excuse is finding the time. I'm lifting 4 days a week, and I'm not sure if I'm able to squeeze in 2-6 more hours a week on martial Arts training. But I'm considering it.

I used to wrestle. I wouldn't mind taking some grappling classes but I would rather just get a concealed weapons permit.
