why are people against marriage?

Well ok its like this
I can see the points made above
but I think all in all, people are afraid of total commitment.....they are leaving their options open....
I guess thats the south coming out in me....lol

here's the truth

look at marriage as going on a diet, it takes great commitment, it's hard work, and at time it can be discouraging when you don't see the results you want, but you always eventually start up your diet again, basically you just can't give up, no matter how hard it gets

maybe people don't believe in divorce? Maybe people should marry for love and not convenience? Maybe people shouldn't settle.

I don't think most who are pro marriage really place much thought to it. They are either people who have just been conditioned to think that this is a logical step in life that everyone must take, or women with dreams of their big white gown and fancy party.

Marriage made sence in the past, but in todays society it no longer works, if it did we would not have as many divorce lawyers. The social stigma of living together out of wedlock is for the most part gone, except in small backwards towns.

well if you truly love someone....whats the problem then?

The problem with most marriages is that each person loses a lot of their individuality - outside interests are dropped etc...it becomes almost a co-dependent situation etc

Good point!! It's important to keep a certain amount of individuality in a marriage while still working towards a common goal.

Plus, a lot of people DO give up too easily, hence a high divorce rate....

It's not that I don't believe in marriage, it's that I believe that I probably won't ever get married.

This has nothing to do with commitment, and everything to do with the type of person I am. I would much rather be alone most of the time, and not have to worry about effecting anyone elses life with my decisions.

I have the greatest respect for people who make marriage work, because it is hard work and lots of give and take. I do think that a lot of people rush into it without understanding this and that is why a lot of marriages do fail.

Cheers,
Scotsman

I am against people RUSHING into it.. or doing it for financial reasons..

I agree...
and if I may add re why so many marriages go sour nowadays.
In the past (excluding prearranged or abusive marriages), when a couple fought over whatever they'd do their best to make up...
a true test of love.
Now some people over the stupidest little argument cry out, "I wanna a f'n divorce!"

For me, personal opinion, too many folk nowadays don't know how to handle a little heat...they just give up.

Peace

*P.S. Re fear of commitment, it goes both ways...not just men.
