WHY are bose audio prices so HIGH? :(

i've been looking at the bose lifestyle 39 series III home tv/dvd/surround sound stereo system, as a christmas present to myself for not going insane the past post-K year here in nawlinz....

does ANYONE discount this system?? all the local auido shops, ebay, the bose website......not much difference in price.

do ya'll have a source for discount bose pricing (that doesn't "glow in the dark) ?

yeh, jh, bose is often not my first choice in audio equipment.....but this particular unit blows the competition away (IMO) with it's small size and sound quality.

if only it wasn't so damn expensive......a lifetime "career" as a simple civil service sufferer has made me a tight wad.....

fuck bose, i'm not buying their shit products again. i just paid $100 for those new TriPod earphones and they fucking suck. The sound quality is great, but the rubber ear contours keep falling off, and I've already lost two of them in the month that I've owned these things. And, a new set of them from bose cost $5 each.

I bought the cubes lifestyle originals in 1993 with the bass module and 2 cubes and it was like a $1,000.00.. The system is not worth it to me. the speakers are a treble version and its hard to get any bass out of them. There are alot of better speakers for the money.

I have one too, it's a theatre system. had it so long I don't remember the model, but they all pretty much look the same anyway....
My bass f'ing pounds.. I have to keep it dialed all the way down when my neighbor is home :worried: It works fine, but one thing I'll say is it's built pretty well, I have moved all over creation, the thing has been beat and it's still working.

i've heard this particular unit in several homes......it's compact size and sound quality works for me! getting bass out of the amplified subwoofer doesn't seem to be an issue.

When I built my home I had a theatre room and had a 60 inch flat on the wall and invested in an Harmon Kardon surround system and it is great.

wow sounds cool... I have a projector.. I use to use it with. but now, my place is not big enough to use the two together without creating mess in here, eventually I'll figure something out. My old house was perfect for it. This place nope.

Bose ain't high end, by any stretch of the imagination. It's one step above a boom box.

I don't know too much about "theater in a box" speakers, but if you've heard them and like them, it's cool. BUT.... Maybe if you heard the lesser priced ones, you would like them as well. Go to a local shop and try them.

I agree bose is overhyped but also somewhat deliver to an extent. That is why they survive. If they were complete shit, they wouldn't survuive this long with those prices. Just like Monster cable...

But if you shopped around with your ears, you can do much better IMO.

Good luck.

and lol @ "Bass" from those systems. I'm sure you've heard it and may have even felt it, but it's all in the (low frequency) numbers and I doubt they deliver them. But if you like it, great!

theater in a box systems sound shitty 99% of the time.

what a joke, might as well get a computer speaker set.

Isn't that what he was referring to in the first post? I just assumed so.

Like I said, I'm not familiar with this type of product.

My brother is buying a nice Samsung 61 inch dlp HDTV and will purchase a surround sound set up with DVD sub and receiver with all the speakers for about $400- $500 from costco. I thik it's Toshiba. He hasn't listened to it but wants a cheap set. I'm sure it's good enough for him and he did read tons of reviews on it stating they were better than the others out there. I think I saw it for <$400 somewhere.

Like I said before, if you listen to the toshiba for $400, you may like that too. Who knows?

I agree with that. My Mom and Dad are serious Audiophiles, they have a "stereo room" in their house with so many different components it lines a whole wall... not one thing in that room is Bose. Cool room though... they have two massage chairs in the middle of the room and a projector so they can watch music doucmentaries. They have such a huge vinly collection it takes up more wall space than I have in my house. The only thing Bose they own is a freaking alarm clock radio in their bedroom and a couple speakers for the livingroom TV.. but where as they paid 10's of thousands for their stuff I only paid 2k..

The CD player in my Olds' stock Bose system sucks. It skips all the time on brand new cds even after I used the cleaning disc 3x in a row. Over-priced generic merchandise.

serves you right for buying your father's oldsmobubble.

it is on MY budget! :worried:

High price doesn't mean high end performance. You could do better for less.

Tell us how much money you want to spend, and what features you want?

**Edit. I said toshiba before, but it was a Samsung surround sound system for $400. Not that it matters, but just in case.

ok......give me some alternatives for a COMPACT all in one home theatre system with surround sound, center speaker, 5.1 capability, cd/dvd/fm playback, small midrange/tweeter speakers and an amplified subwoofer small enough to hide behind the sofa?

i have plenty of 80's/90's audio equipment: LARGE cerwin vega speakers, seperate amp/eq/cd player/dvd player componets....i want to dump all the various units for a SMALL all-in-one unit that still sounds great.

I haven't kept up with the pre-packaged HT rigs, dunno what's out there. I suppose Polk Audio or Paradigm might have something decent in that range, or the afore-mentioned Klipsch. Some of the English brands such as KEF, Wharfedale, Mission have some reasonable-looking HT offerings now, dunno if they'll come in under your budget limit though.

Klipsch is awesome.

I stood in line on Black Friday for 3 hours to buy their 10" subwoofer for $200 (original $400)

and I am kicking myself for not picking up their 5 speaker set for $250. (not sure about original price)

in response to gonelifting (and others) who inquired.....

i finally did cave in and purchase the bose lifeystyle surround sound system a couple of days after starting this thread. it was like the Corian kitchen counter tops i had to have for the last house....i spent 3 years walking thru home depot staring at the corian display and rubbing my hand lovingly over the diaplay and muttering "ooooooohhhh, corrrrriianNNNN"....:FRlol:

every time i walked into an audio store with the bose display i would play the demonstration several times and then shake my head at the price tag and walk out, much to the annyoance of the sales staff....

i got the model 28, the bottom of the line for the lifestyle models. it doesn't have the internal music storage capabilitiy of the upper line models....but it was 2K cheaper!! i have SO many cd's form the mid 80's on up, so music choice was not an issue.

a local appliance store had 12 month same as cash financing on this item, which takes some of the "sting" out of a major (for me) appliance purchase. 2 days after Christmas they rad an ad with coupons for two hundred dollars off any purchase above 2K! after a polite converstion with the sales manager, whom i assured i would box up, return/re-purchase for the coupon amount, i received the additional discount. ( i kept my raban sunglasses on, sucked in my gut, and frowned the whole time we "discussed" it.

it took me a while to run the wires and hook up everything to it, muttering to myself much of the time, but it was worth it. there was extra inputs to run my vcr thru it and a couple left over....(what to buy now?)

my brother eagerly snarfed up my old space consuming audio system (cerwin vega speakers and subwoofer, yamaha receiver, bsr equalizer). merry christmas, lil' brutha!!

i thought my 25 year old system sounded pretty good...but i hear nuances and additional instrumentation on cd's that i didn't notice before. the powered sub woofer kicks out more than enough bass to make the windows rattle. the combo of directv, hbo, bose lifestyle and mitsubishi big screen makes me wonder if i will ever attend a first run movie again.

bose is about 50% overpriced, IMO, but nobody else had the combination of compact size, am-fm receiver, cd/dvd, additional audio inputs and sound quality all in one unit.

ok, audiophiles.....take your cheap shots now......

So you can really distinguish the Lance Bass solos in the N'Sync tracks?

rnch,

If you felt something hit you in back of the head when you left the store after you purchased the Bose system ... it was your change.

That's all you need bro. Congrats! If it sounds good, then go for it. You're the one listening to it everyday.

Now get out all those old CD's and listen to them again. They will sound different with the new/better system. good luck

as soon as i find out where the HELL my dig camera is, i'll add a few pics.

for audio...got to sam's or best buy and hit the test button on the bose display, close ur eyes, and pop audio wood.
