When I was in Playa Del Carmen on vacation I talked to alot of Europeans. I talked to people from Holland, Switzerland and Germany. They are so socialized. They believe that all americans have guns. They also believed that when you open a bank account here the bank give you a gun. I told them I wish that was true but it isn't.

I asked them about hunting and they said if you want to go hunting the govt issues you a gun for the season and you have to return it when it is over. I asked them well what if someone broke into your house when you had the gun and tried to kill you and your family and you shot them with the govt rifle? They said that they would get 15 years in prison. I told them that SUCKS!

Their tax rate is 50% and the medium income is lower than ours and they pay $6 for a gallon of gas. (now you see why we are in Irag?) I tell you fellow americans we need to be feel blessed for living here. They all wished that they lived here. Socialism does not work and Europe proves it. Long live america and screw you liberals that are trying to ruin our country.

And now we dominate the hockey world as well...The other countries can have the sports for all non-contact games...who needs them anyway

Which countries have $6/gal of gas? I had been following gas prices for awhile and hadn't seen anything higher than it is here - but I don't think we currently pay $6.

Also, national tax + state tax + sales tax can easily go over 50% tax - so I wouldn't brag too much about the US taxes.

We came in 3rd in Womens World cup this year and Won it last round several years ago.

We came in 3rd or 4th in Mens World Cup 2 years ago I think.

World Cup is the only TRUE world championship even more so than the Olympics IMO..

Curling, All those things you mentioned is why IMO that many hate us.
We are good, we know it, and we flaunt it in their faces..

Unfortunatly it is OUR definition of GOOD, not theirs.

We have many Bad points as well that add to their hatred such as
being spoiled with all we have..

I wouldn't call us spoiled I would rather used the word blessed. And as far as the definition of good seems like they all wish they lived here to me. Also if they didn't like it they shouldn't have let their govt take away their guns then they could adopt a constituion like ours too. But they gave their guns away just like those idiot germans let hitler take theirs.

I am just repeating what I was told by people that live in Europe. I mean they live there and they don't like it and want to move to America. Check this out they don't even have guns.

I prefer a more lasse faire approach to the economy/ business sector and more civil liberties than many Europrean countries, but I hate the Christian morality prevalent in the US. Hong Kong has most of that, except the right to buy guns. However, Hong Kong is a small place and thus it really doesn't count.

If some "liberals" didn't push their agenda...we would still have kids working in coal mines, if you got hurt at work you'd be fired, corporations would pollute at will, if you didn't put in 80 hours a week on the job the company would dock your pay, and there would be formaldehyde in your food because "food experts" (industry appointed) say its the safest preservative.

In America (as far as I'm concerned) we pay WAY too much in various taxes.

We need another revolution to set our government straight.

And, our constitution is at the point where it's pretty much not worth the paper it was written on (all in the name of Homeland Security).

Positive social change since the enlightenment has typically been initated by liberals... there may be nothing right now that we can see changing but who knows what may come of it in the future.

One thing we can know for certain... conservatives and their clinging to the status quo can not, by the inherent nature of conservativism, advance society forwards...

So for good or for bad it is typically liberal ideas that change society...

I think we can more or less agree than over the course of relatively recent history this change has been impressively positive... i can see no reason for that to change.

I have family in NYC and they pay much more taxes than I do. Also, gas is freaky high there compared to Montreal (and I aint gonna talk about Alberta). Housing is expensive. Same for cars.

I know Europe is socialized to the bone, but in terms of taxes, not really different from California....

They are in the same catagory of idiots. The Republicans are increasing government power for "security" purposes, while the Democrats will increase government for "social" reasons. Either way, they are increasing the power of government to do as it will. If you don't think so, see the Supreme Court rulings that passed during the New Deal era. Oliver Wendall Holmes wrote some of the most government expanding opinions as any, all for the sake of "social good".

Income taxes are not the only source of revenue drain in society. Look at the cost of goods, houses, imbedded taxes, etc. A nation may have a higher income level, but when accounting for the cost of living we see the real value. All of the social programs that these highly socialized nations offer cost tremendous amounts of money and they constantly increase. They are not paid by low tax rates.

Then I wonder what states like California do with their taxes since they dont have a socialist healthcare system as Canada does.

BTW most european countires (I know it's the case with Spain) have a "two speed" healthcare system. They offer basic medicare like you guys do but citizens can also suscribe to private insurance and/or pay a fee to by-pass the standard service.

If your main argument for what makes a great country is the ability to own and fire a lethal weapon I feel very sorry for you and the people around you. What a civilised and developed way of living you stand for.

I have been further than playa del carmen. I have been to Belize, and I have been to Argentina twice. Those two places both had bad economies. It is true I have never been to Europe but I don't care to truth be known. I would rather spend my money on exotic locals with my family then see the countryside of Germany or France or any of those other countries like them.

Yes, they did mention that you could smoke pot in cafes. And they also said that they didn't have enough cops either. Inotherwords it could take 30 or 40 minutes to see a cop if you were in a serious accident.

And I am not sure why you call me hick. I like rock, I wakeboard and I ride motorcycles. If you are calling me a hick because I am from Texas then you can bite me you socialized wuss. Because personally I think Texas should be its own country.

Well since I live in a country where that is hardly ever likely to happen unless you are heavily involved with drugs or gangs and piss someone off, I don’t think I will be feeling sorry for myself.

Interesting that in the previous post you talk up your policing and in the very next post you talk about the need for defence against violent crime and murder. You argument is a bit mixed there.
 
Whats with Americans and this paranoia that someone is always going to break into their house and rape their family and shit......like 90% of all break ins are because some idiot left a door or window open.........I have met far more Europeans that would rather stay in Europe than come to America.....and those who come here view this place as shameless place where now one gives a shit anyone else....and if youre talking about rights why dont we bring up the patriot act....Americans are so busy giving their rights away to the government and then they turn around and bitch about a socialized government in Europe

They do quite a lot with their citzens to prevent such an occurence in the first place. Compare violent crime rates in both countries.

I would be extremely surprised to find a single European who believed that ALL Americans owned or carried guns , certainly the belief regarding the bank account opening is a fabrication of your imagination , I imagine that they told you of the relevant scene in "Bowling for Columbine" and you put 2 + 2 together and came up with 19.

My German ex gf of 3 years Dad had hunting guns and rifles PERMANENTLY , your information is incorrect , similarly such law as you describe doesnt exist in other parts of the E.U. I am familiar with such as Ireland or England. We have something here called "undue force" , you would likely do prison time if you shot them DEAD , if however you shot and injured the person then it is unlikely that you would even be charged.

I live and work in Germany , the top tax rate is 44% , in Ireland it is 46% , in Switzerland it is closer to 35%. Our tax system is staggered so we only pay higher rate tax on the top portion of our income. I have visited and even worked in the U.S. and I envy you neither your pollution (perhaps as a result of your approcah to gas-suzzling) , your work practices (I have seen actuaries earning $300k + per year in little fucking cubicles or your interesting approach to "news" reporting. In fact I know of no-one who has expressed a positive wish to live and work in the States beyond a year or two and many who vow they would NEVER work there (I am NOT one of the latter). The States is a wonderful place however , it deals with immigration in a far better manner than Europe.

Although hypocracy does not invalidate criticism, it is obvious that many Americans have tunnel-vision and selective perception. America is voluntarily getting rammed up the ass with a smile. Some people are just bending over.

I love the US for many reasons, and I hate the current situation.

I dont understand what you are saying here Y lifter. I think 4.1 % in the UK (mostly 14 - 24 year olds, which does not indicate house breaks as Curling was afraid of) against whatever the number from the US was, even after it dropped 10% speaks for itself.

I am not being anti America here. I regard it as a good place to live and have many close friends and collegues there. The argument stems from Carling's main argument that what makes the country great is each individuals right to hold a weapon. Im surprised that you dont actually find it insulting that that has been regarded as the main reason to love your country.
 
I'm not discounting that the U.S. has a thing for violence compared to many countries. Part of it is our demanded right to own, our love, infatuation and need for weapons.
Especially handguns.

I just found it interesting and a pleasant surprise how low the british crime rate was...

Americans who clamor for "free" healthcare and other social benefits don't seem to realize how big the tax burden will become.

Also, the quality of healthcare in socialized countries is inferior to our own. Ask any Canadian.

You are correct I am sure they watched that movie and believed it to be true. One thing I notices about the swiss they didn't understand sarcasm so they probably believed they movie was true.

Curling, arguing against you and your inability to look outside your own little world is exhausting, whatever the subject. You can own a gun in this country, but you need a licence, this controls who can have one legally. You need a licence to drive a car in the US right, why, don’t they trust you with cars?

On this subject alone, would you rather:

a) live in a country with a high risk of violent crime and need a gun for protection?

or

b) live in a place with a very low risk of the crime in the first place?

In fact, please don’t answer that as I can’t be bothered with the predictable response.

Which countries have $6/gal of gas? I had been following gas prices for awhile and hadn't seen anything higher than it is here - but I don't think we currently pay $6.

Also, national tax + state tax + sales tax can easily go over 50% tax - so I wouldn't brag too much about the US taxes.

Gas in Canada, Japan and the Uk is much more expensive than here.

No state tax in Texas, Florida and other states. Bush is cutting and will continue to cut income tax rates.

Actually, I also wouldnt take Holland, Switzerland and Germany as a representitive cross section of Europe anyway, there are vast differences in all areas of law and fiscal policy accross the reigon for good reason...

I am sorry going to answer anyway. I choose "A" because guns make me feel secure and they are the great equalizer no matter how big and bad someone is I can take them down with a little bity bullet. Besides have you ever fired a gun? Man you talk about feeling good nothing beside firing the gun between your legs feels better.

Yes I have shot many guns, which where licensed. I can own a gun if I apply to do so. The majority of people have no need for a gun but if they like to shoot then they apply for a sports licence first.

The US constitution is universally recognized as the standard blueprint for democracy. Our forefathers saw fit to include the 2d Amendment to protect us from tyranny, not so we could hunt. It's working pretty good so far.

You know how your govt in England over taxed us(the US) back in the 1700s well if we didn't have guns we couldn't have kicked your govt ass back then to get our independence. Inotherwords what are you and other English people going to do when your govt become tyrantenous(sp) again? They have your guns you can't do squat. We can.

I would consider myself a moderate. I believe we have the right to own guns, I believe that homosexuals are human beings and therefore should be allowed to do whatever they want, and I believe in a smaller government.

I always find it interesting how people overemphasize or completely make up things that other people have said in order to try and find something to refute them on, and make it easier for them to understand the opposing view point.

All/None, Always/Never, and most other absolutes rarely if ever belong in debates... there is hardly ever a clear cut answer- simply different degrees of correctness and logic.

You might also ask what the great british public normally does whent he government severally pisses it off........

Last time was a couple fo years ago when lorry drivers decided they were being charged too much for fuel. They set up blockades and the whole country ground to a halt.
