I admit its 95% nothingness interrupted by 5% unbelievable natural beauty..

It is one of those areas I think is much better appreciated while visiting... You just can't go out and explore the Black Hills or other areas on a daily basis.

And like you said...that it is an all or nothing state. There are many areas that just aren't a "scenic" wonderland.

Other than that...I think probably because of its location it is overpriced as far as restaurants, gas, etc., it is not the warmest of our states, actually quite windy and cold during this time of year...and as far as "entertainment" in the social form there is not much....Although I did notice a lot of strip bars. But that really isn't the kind of entertainment I am personally into....(not that it is bad)

I hear the exact same thing about Alaska..
Lots of Mud and Brown outside to the Coastline, Glaciers and Mtns..
