I'd rather listen to "happy rap" than weak ass gangsta shit anyday. I'm not gonna deny that I didn't listen to Snoop and Dre back in the day.. but I'll take Mos Def, Hiero, Pharcyde, Tribe Called Quest, Jurrasic 5, Dilated Peoples, Outkast, or Tha Alkaholiks over some Casio keyboard beat and a dude rapping about how hard he is.

Whatever happened to MC Ren? I always thought he was a better rapper than Dre and/or Eazy.
I have his first solo record (from around 1990). It was some good shit.
Oh, and Run DMC was never that good, and in no way comparable to NWA.
(Although, most people think they went to shit when Cube took off....I think they were better without him).

I can remember when King of Rock and Rasing Hell came out and they were considered hardcore for the time. DMC was no joke, and I for one would never consider them happy rap. They were one of the first groups of the 80's to break out of the Hip Hop genre and start rapping. They paved the road for NWA. I see it very easy to compare DMC to NWA, they both took rap to a place it had never been.
