who knows something about mountain bikes?

are any of these bikes decent? i want to make use of my friend's discount.

Diamondback
Iron Horse
The North Face
Haro
Marin

I used to have a DiamondBack mang. It was kickass. I beat the hell out of it and it totally took it. Granted most bike name brands are mainly just a frame with a lot of 3rd party components from my experience, so the name of the bike might not be THAT important. That said, most of the well known brands (Trek, Cannondale, Diamondback, etc..) are going to have good components and be well built.

get a hardtail for starters (front suspension only).

get one of these:
trek 4900
cannondale f300 or f400
speacialized rockhopper

there you go, now stop looking and get the one out of these bikes with the sweetest paint job.

Not to up on Trek

The f300 is nice, but the F400 gives you the headshock. Super smooth travel, but depending on use you may have to rebuild it(the shock) every couple years.

Rockhopper is a pretty nice bike. They beefed uo the frame this year and included the O.R.E. downtube. Bike is kinda heavy for my taste.

How much money you wanna spend? What do you weigh? How agressive do you plan on riding?

i want to spend less than $1000. i weigh 215-220. i plan on using this as an all around bike, mostly just for some serious cardio.

I like the GT avalache. You can get a good one with disk brakes easily under grand

just get a cannondale badboy ultra. comes with 26"x23C tires BUT you can also put on mountain bike tires on the same rim. plus you dont have any worries with tire rub on the fork and rearstays because it designed to handle both sizes.

seriously, do what i say and you cant do wrong.
here's a link: (btw, if you're poor just get the non-ultra one)

Bad Boy is a nice bike. If ya don't mind spending a little more go for the '05 Stumpjumpet HT. Retails about $1300 we have em onm sale for $1200 right now. Even better would be if you could find a new "04 model. They go about $200 less. The bike weighs about 24.5 lbs. Fox F80 fork. XT rear derailer. Avid V brakes. M4 tubing. The bike is IMO the best HT you can buy around $1000.
