i am thinking about buying a mountain bike, but the problem is...i don't know a single thing about decent bikes and what i should be looking for.

i am just looking for an all around good bike, both on the road and off. i'm also not looking to drop a ton of cash.

any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

get a hardtail for starters (front suspension only).

get one of these:
trek 4900
cannondale f300 or f400
speacialized rockhopper

there you go, now stop looking and get the one out of these bikes with the sweetest paint job.

i got a trek 4100, spent less than 300 bucks.

great bike for the money....

front suspension, aluminum frame, 21 speed....

the difference in cost usually occurs in the quality of the hubs, wheels, and derailers, etc

The big variable is what kind of riding. A few hundred dollar bike will work well for most. If you plan on getting into hard-core off road only. Spend more!

i need a hybrid type of bike, and i'm not looking to spend more than $1,000.

is diamondback any decent?
