Who here has kids and encourages them to hit the weights?

Just wondering as my girl is now 9 mos. pregnant with my son. If you don't have kids but plan on it you can ring in on this one too.

There is nothing better than a father who is an experienced lifter teaching his son the "PROPER" way to lift and train, thats some priceless shit brother. I would probably start my son out when he is around 12 years old, prior to that I would encourage him to participate in whatever sports he seems to enjoy the most then apply the training at a moderate pace to aid him in his goals that he has for the particular sports he wants to participate in. Sticking to push ups, abdominal exercises, pullups and powerlifting movements would be a smart move at the beginning alway emphasizing safety. peace

Our daughter is VERY familiar with our gym(even though it may be from the child care center). She understands that mom and dad go there to keep their bodies and mind healthy.

You can NEVER start too early in teaching them to love and respect their own bodies.

SOOOO sad that very few mom's and dad's do this for their children now a days.

I wonder about this myself....

My son is 6 and I'm planning on introducing him to weight training when he's around 12 or 13.

I certainly don't want to stunt his growth. Which brings me to the question that I ask.... does anyone think that there is significant difference between a push-up and a bench-press? Of course not, but I remember as a kid in grade school.... they made us to push-ups/sit-ups/pull-ups all the time:confused: I wonder if that had any ill effects on my growth? (I'm 6'1", but hell...would'a like to have been 6'3")

I have 2 boys 8 & 4 and both of them kinda screw around in the garage while I am working out.......they are both skinny like I was until age 25 so I am wondering at what age they can start hitting the iron. I know they can probably do more body weight only exercises now but I definately don't want to push them into it.......that's why I let them mess around with the db's and they have me feel their muscles LOL

I went to school with a guy that was so big in 8th grade they told him to stop lifting.

My son is 2 months old.....He starting his first cycle next week....he's can do the bottle 10x slow and concentrated curls. LOL ;)

I encourage people to hit kids with weights.

Seriously though, If I ever have a kid, I'll definately encourage him to lift weights.

i encourage my kids, my daughter has agym membership now and goes with me...shes competitive and has partial leg pressed the stack for 15 reps on the cybex machine, my son isnt old enough, but we go do"cardio" at the fitness center here at the complexand run sometimes..he plays with the weight machines there-"benches"30 lbs for reps..

Boxing is a great idea that or some form of martial arts. I wish I would have taken something like that, now I don't have the time between work and the gym and now the baby. I will also encourage my boy to play sports and take some form of self defense.

Boxing is cool. My dad fought golden gloves in the military, and taught me a great deal in my youth. Also, I've got three kids, 7,9, and 11 with my boy being the youngest. My kids are already aware of the benefits of working out and lifting weights along with a proper diet. They'll always make comments like..........is this on your diet daddy? Usually I'll just laugh and say NO! LOL

But they enjoy fooling around with the dumbells, and they are all involved in some type of athletics at school. I think it's a great idea to set that kind of example for kids today. Look at all of the FAT kids, that are still so young..............and it's already over. SAD.
