How did you transtion from one to the other?

I am starting to think there needs to be a change in my life not getting what I want from my current career. If I won the lotto I have a good idea what I would do and it wouldn't involve never working again. So I think that means I should be doing what I would do had I won the lotto.

Raina switched careers. From a clerk/admin asst type of job she hated to being an RN. I think she's exactly your age and she only did this like within the past 18 months.

I should add, you will definitely have to make some concessions. If you're unhappy in your present career, the toll in stress alone may not be worth the bigger, more secure paycheck.

I got out of financial services age 31. Sales just wasn't for me and I was getting ulcers. Floated for 3 years then got into IT at 33. I'm pretty sure I'll ride this train to the end.

I have, and Im looking to do it again.

You only live once, and theres really no point in spending 40+ hours a week doing something you hate.

Agreed. I did the switch at 25 after working for three years in management hell. Actually tried to go back to the corporate world and left again after another two years.

Do what you love and find people that will pay you for it.

The best advice I can give is try to get experience, or do something, in the new career so the transition is smooth. I branch out whenever I get the chance so I have experience in doing something new.

I hate 9 to 5 and swore on my life I would never have a boss again when I got out of the military. I have bosses with my university job but they are not really bosses because it is very flexible. Plus if the hammer ever fell I would be out the door before they could pick it up. As for my other ventures I run the show or have partners I can work with so no assholes there.

Why not do both? I currently have one and figure that I'll do something else while I'm still involved in the first one.

that's a good concept..

for me in my life i tend to "get bored" after 3-4 yrs so something else, transition ??? hmm
life is a journey yada yada take from each "job" experience the things that make you a better person, the person you want to be, then change.

Often an event in our life is the perfect time to make a change..

Maybe not giving or helping you much, but know you are not alone..

I'll agree with this 100%.. I spent 8 yrs building a business where the 50% partner did the tech work and I did all others..

the good of that is I came out with knowing how to run a business..

he came out of it working yet for someone else.. takes time to recover from a business ending much like a relationship, that's why I have the advice i did, life is a journey, take from each relationship and experience that which is good, casting aside that which isn't..

I did it. Was in the 'hospitality' industry for 15 years. Even worked for Hyatt at one point. HATED IT. Hours sucked, pay sucked, always on my feet, couldn't form a normal social life (after turning down invites to do something social because I 'had to work' the invites stop coming.)

Transition was not easy. The only solution I found was EDUCATION.... or rather RE-EDUCATION (my poly-sci diploma was worth shit in the job market). So, I enrolled in a vocational type school and attended full time during the days and worked full time at night - did this for 18 months. I graduated at 36 and haven't looked back since. Am in the telecommunications field now, working as a business analyst, earn good money, own my own home and haven't worked an evening or week end in 13 years.

That's not easy to do, but I did it. I was a TV and VCR repairman for a long time, but as of around 2000, everybody stopped having those things fixed. So I took a job in an engineering lab as an electronics tech, and hated it! I was used to being outside all the time, going to peoples' houses. The lab was the same building and same faces, same time every day. I got totally sick of the whole tech field, and now I'm an avocado farmer. This isn't any better money, nor any easiser, but it's a big change, and I'm happy now. It took a lot of sacrificing; going from a new Corvette to an '84 Corolla hatchback for awhile, and resisting the urge to run up any credit card debts.

Bottom line is that if you don't take the leap, you'll be exactly where you are now, forever.

Yep. I currently work as a skilled tradesman during the day (evenings actually) and started up my own biz with a close friend 2 years ago. Our biz is gradually growing to the point I will be able to ditch the day job.

The key to making the transition was going and getting further education, as others have already pointed out.
