While cutting...why weight train?

Stupid question I know, so I must be missing something.

First, you're not going to be gaining any muscle.
Second, you're not eating a whole lot of protein to repair the muscle.

I've been working out for past 6 months and i'm starting CKD tomorrow, of course i'll weight train since I know I have to, but I don't understand why. From Mr. X's CKD guide you train to like at least 80% of your potential on Mon/Tue, then on the 6th and early 7th you do a lot of low weight/high reps. Someone fill me in here, I don't want to overtrain and screw something up.

I think it's a good question. The most obvious answer is to deplete glycogen stores. I've had some people swear to me that they are gainining muscle while ketogenic dieting, and I've read that that doesn't happen--the diet is good for preserving muscle, but not for building it. Any experts got an opinion?

Another follow up question: A woman insisted to me that even though she's been in a stall on her Atkins diet, she must be replacing the fat with a lot of muscle because her clothes fit better. It seems unlikely that she could have gained an appreciable amount of muscle during a month long diet stall. Or can she?

While on my keto diet I found that there were many times I did not lose weight on the scale, but inches went down. I am not sure why it happened, but it did. I did weight training while on a keto diet, but stuck to all compound exercise to burn more calories and try to build core strength. I do not think I put on any muscle, but i did get stronger. Some people say that higher rep, with less time between sets (30 seconds or less) burns fat better than cardio. I do not know enough about the science behind it, but I did find I burned more fat while doing both cardio and compound weights at the same time. That sounds sort of strange, I do not mean I was doing clean and presses while jogging in place :)

maintain muscle mass, if you don't routinely train the muscle then the body thinks it's just a waste of good protein and then the muscle starts to atrophy. but if you over train, then well you're setting yourself up for poor recovery and loss of mass. It's a fine line.

I weight train while cutting to maintain muscles, and help burn fat. There are specific enzymes in your muscles I believe, that burn fat. Even in resting

Well, it also depends on how much you have to begin with. If your untrained like me, then yeah, your going to gain a little.

It all boils down to your protein intake. Hell, I probably take in near 160 grams a day, at least, which I think is in ok amount for a roughly 3000 cal/day diet. Salmon is your friend. Hell, my salmon meal has 100grams of protein in it alone.

If you are eating 160g's a day of protein, I dont think having 100 of them in one sitting is a very good approach if you are trying to avoid going catabolic.

Would be better to spread this out...

if you eat alot of protien you can still gain muscle right....better be true...im eating an 800 daily cal deficite for the next few weeks, i have to drop 5lbs.

I'm not an expert, but I've read that an excess of protien can be converted to glucose in a ketogenic diet. If that's true, it defeats the purpose of the diet--fat should be the majority of calories. That's the loose formula I've been useing when running a calorie deficeit and it seems to work fine.

It has been proven many times that while lifting and dieting muscle is preserved compared to when you just use diet and cardio. Its also proven that after a weight lifting session you BMR is raised for an extended period of time after the workout. It is better for you than just plodding along on the treadmill for 40 minutes. Someone here has to have the studies hopefully they post them.

Excess protein can be converted to glucose. On a keto diet you should keep fat grams equal or geater than protein. I did this by adding olive oil or flaxseed oil to my protein shakes and eating higher fat red meat. Olive oil was great for me, I like the stuff, I can drink 3 or 4 tbsps at a time out of the bottle. I have to do that in private though, most people think it is disgusting :).

Well, also too - I think that you don't see the insulin spikes on a diet like this like you would when consuming both simple and complex carbs. Overhead is right though, the fat is very important.

Protein in excess amounts can throw some people out of ketosis.

weight train to keep muscle mass " if you dont use it you lose it"....excess protein can knock you out of ketosis so be careful...

IMHO

IMHO I think that you should eat almost ALL protein while cutting. That is what I have been doing for four months and I went from 6'6 215 to 6'6 203 and am MUCH stronger than I was previously. I went from love handles to a slightly defined 6-pack, and have increased size and strength in all parts of my body (I'm talkin going from benching 240 to 270). I am doing this for basketball and my vert has increased 6 inches easily, because I went from basic dunks to being able to do reverses. Anyway, I believe that eating mostly protein, with a few carbs, EATING EARLY in the day and cutting sugars is the way to cut... without losing very much muscle if not gaining it.

heh heh, overhead... if people think that's disgusting i pop fish oil capsules, drain them into a shot glass, add some water, and down the hatch it goes...

I could see consuming that much protein as long as your activity level was high. Playing ball a couple times a week would burn most excess off. But.....if on a keto diet *some* people are unable to stay in ketosis eating that much protein. I sure wish I could

PancakeFiend you may have me beat there. I can take the tablets, but I am not sure I could just drink the oil. My girlfriend has to leave the room before I drink the olive oil or she will throw, if I told her I was drinking fish oil she might have to leave the house for a while :).

why not save money and purchase fish oil in a bottle?

can't find it at drug stores/grocery, plus i'd rather get my oil right away instead of buying it online. The only stuff i can find is flavored cod liver oil.
