which machine for dl's?

which machine at the gym do you guys use for deadlifts, do you use a smith style or more of a free machine? i never see anyone do deadlifts at the gym, so i don't see what is the best to use.

I suppose Pull-Throughs with cables could be a kind of deadlift. Also, maybe using a low-lying pulley & pulling the handle up from the floor, sort of like the start of an upright row or shrug, might sort of simulate it. But not much!

BTW, I just want to say, I really frigging like some of the avatars some people use around here, like here, swaptrex & KillahBee. It's so pleasant to be carelessly scrolling down a page then getting my eyes yanked out of my head when jiggling breasts, nice hot butts, or 2 girls kissing pass by!

The only thing that would be almost acceptable on a machine would be shoulders and inclines on a smith machine and tricep pull downs with cables...and that is only to change things up before you hit the real sets.

I have seen what I think is a deadlift machine. It looks like one of those hammer strength shrug machines, but lower. Never tried it myself but it seems pretty odd what with bar travel and body type really affecting the lift.

And I see lots of people that use the hammer strength chest press for shrugs, too.

You can use a seated pulley row machine for a deadlift-like movement. Having extended your legs out, swivel backwards at the hips until you are pretty much completely horizontal. I guess it's more of a good morning than a deadlift but it's better than nothing.

I would use the "barbell" machine.

It's a piece of steel approximately 7 feet long with an area designed for "gripping". They've made sure it will be comfortable for your hands by NOT including some sweat soaking neoprene covering so commonly found on other machines.

The "barbell" is usually found on the "floor" or if you are lucky, on the lifting platform. Sometimes you may have to look for it on the display "rack" - where it can be placed at different heights for your viewing pleasure. Just look for some 130lb fukwit doing curls and he'll probably be in the "rack".

One great feature of the "barbell" is that the "selectorized weight stack" comes apart from the bar and can therefore be left scattered across the gym "floor".

The beautiful tracking motion of the "barbell" is facilitated by cams and cables also known as you "knees" and "tendons". The body is relaxingly supported by your "spine" and "core muscles" - a system rarely used by other machines.

Caution should be exercised whist using the "barbel machine". Common problems not normally associated with machine use include:

1 - Actual increased muscle mass in such problem areas as the traps, thighs, errectors (and the rest of the damn body!)

2 - Increased joint fuction and health

3 - Rapid increases in FUNCTIONAL strength

4 - Ability to actually grip something
