Where to go in Amsterdam?

Next week i'm off to Amsterdam with the girlfriend for a few days. For those that have been, where are the best places to visit?

Also...how safe is the red light district for couples to walk through at night?

Years ago, but likely still relevant..

Red Light is super tourist oriented, and as such, a bit safer than the off the beaten
path adult places at night. Stay in the brightly lit sections and large venues.
Or go before dark as it can be even more surreal.

Dark Alleyways/Entrances and small joints should be avoided unless you are in a large group.

amsterdam and rio de janiero are the last 2 places on earth that dullboy would take a girlfriend to. he'd sooner take a g/f to thailand.

dullboy isn't a big fan of amsterdam. too many creepy north and west african types bothering tourists.

and for a bunch of people who pride themselves on being so "open minded", the dutch of amsterdam are generally a bunch of arseholes.
