When To Have Carbs...

When do I have carbs? They're good post-workout right? Like a quick source? And of course protien after a workout too, yes?

I found this AMAZING stuff at the healthfood place near me. $3 for a lb of "Textured Vegetable Protien" which has like 20+ carbs, and 26g's or protien... and the lb lasts about a week!! It's super-food! What do you guys think of this? A very nice post-training food, along with honey nut granola (40g's of carbs)!

the protein in that stuff is probably soy, and from what i remember, its not that great a source. the granola stuff sounds good though

Have you tasted it? probably doesnt taste too good. Also, it is going to be soy protein. Whey would be better.

No, it has no taste, it's actually pretty good. Like... very SLIGHT taste, I mean.

Can someone explain to me why Whey is better than soy protien?

i dont think soy is a complete protein that would help as much as whey for muscle-building. i also read that too much of soy protein could lead to estrogenic side effects. i'm sure that would be at really high intakes though

Post-workout, you want something that will be digested/absorbed quickly, so it will get to in your system as soon as possible. Whey is very fast.

I wouldn't completely discredit it... Maybe not the best for post workout... but for $3 .. hell, you can't go wrong..
Grab a handful of nuts whenever you take it.... I've read that nuts contain the remaining amino acids that soy is lacking... thus completing the protein...
Take 1 serving for a mid morning shake with some peanuts and I don't think you can go wrong.
My 2 pennies

Like a shake or something you mean? 'cuz I mean for a 5.5 lb tub it's $33.90 (shipping and all) for the whey protien powder that's 22g's per serving... that's 72 servings per container. Still, it's alot of money and such.

Stupid whey, has to be better doesn't it? -_-

I put TVP cruchies in my eggdrop soup. :)

Like Zack said, whey isn't necessarily SUPERIOR, as much as it's got a different absorption rate. Post workout, you're prime for uptake, and you need a protein that's fast absorbing. Whey, especially hydro 520 whey, meets that need. There are plenty of vegetarian BB's that use soy, and it works for them. MS for one. She has an amazing body, and is both natural and vegetarian. Honestly, most of the soy I've seen in powder form is MORE expensive than whey.

If you are looking for something "complete" in the sense that it contains the most different types of amino acids, you want an egg. It's the only thing you can eat that's an entire animal. It wouldn't be my top choice post workout though.

Have i missed something here. The original thread was about carbs and everyone is telling him to take protein.

I take carbs in all the time, morning noon and night. I'm not worried about getting fat.....my metabolism isthat fast fortunately.

Post workout is The most important time to ingest carbs. Take something with dextrose in it which is a fast absorbing carb or something as simple as a piece of fruit.

vinylgroover has a good point the best way to ingest carbs while training is to eat long branch carbs about 2 hours before a workout session and then right after a workout have fast acting carbs such as OJ, this fast acting carb will boost your insulin level so have protein as well since insulkin will shuttle these nutrientsd directly into your cells and stop the catabolic state people asre in after training.....

Woah, orange juice is a good source of carbs post-workout? Nice... and protien... Whey preferably? So I can make a shake with that protien powder and some milk to mix it with, and some OJ? Or maybe the powder WITH the OJ... and that'll be sufficient enough?

Doesn't OJ consits mainly of fructose? I was under the immpression than fructose was one of the only sugars that won't induce an insulin spike???

it will but not as much as glucose, but it will cause a spike.
