Whats wrong with Gay Pride?

Hey Bro,s.
How important do you think Gay Pride is? As someone whose odometer has turned over a couple of times, I tend to not even go to Pride anymore. That comes from the part of me that thinks gays are so everyday (while still being fabulous) and so mainstream that Pride parades are a big yawn. At the same time, another reality hits me in the face when I see evidence that there are still quite a few people out there who hate queers. But is Gay Pride a good way to change the hearts and minds of America? What do you think?Ever catch yourselves looking at the guy doing squats w/ that big bulge between his legs while he,s thrusting all that weight up? J/K

I don't think gay pride has anything to do with me looking at some dude doing squats? Most of the time I ever have looked at anyone doing squats its because they are either 1) moving only about 5 inches, or 2) finished up leg presses with over 600 pounds (moving it about 5 inches) and then did half squats with 95 pounds.

I work with 5 gay guys and a lesbian (I work in San Francisco), generally they are the nicest people to work with, although of course some of them are 'queens' and a bit too gossipy for my tastes, but whatever. I don't think people should be ashamed for who they are and they should not have to fear for thier own safety just because they swing the other way, I think hatred is a bunch of machismo bullshit, just the same as racism makes no fucking sense at all, "gee I hate that fucker, he has a better tan than I do", just bull.

No one even seems to understand what pride means anymore. People always say they are "proud" to be canadian or american or whatever. I understand you are happy to live in a free country but pride is the wrong descriptive word there, sorry. Pride implies you personally had something to do with making it better if ya ask me. I know what you mean, I think alot of the "pride" BS sounds like racism more than anything else. As far as gay people though, I think its more along the lines of them not being afraid of who they are, and getting together with similar people. If they lived in a closet thier entire lives they'd be getting a permanent raw deal.

If thats they way they are, they shouldn't have to be ashamed and hide for who they are.

Sorry, but the VAST majority of the people I see in those parades are not he type to hide who they really are. In factm they seem to pretty much make damn sure everyone they meet knows exactly what they are all about. That is a generalization but it seems to occur a fair bit in the gay community.

went to my first pride event this year it was stupid. I hated it, if you see one big fat hairy transvestite you see have seen them all. I do not see what dressing up like an ugly woman has to do with pride. I thought it was dumb but I have nothing against other gays wanting to show their pride but it was just not for me. I will stick to going to the clubs afterwards. I think it is important that people get to show their pride but sometimes the way they do it does not show gay people in the best light. It shows us as being queens, porn stars, bull dikes, transvestites and druggies. Maybe the parades should be comprised off regular business professionals, cops, construction workers, firefighters and regular folks like that to show that we are not different from other people. Sometimes I think these pride event separate us even more than they help us join mainstream society. Just my 2 cents!

I personally do not like Pride events but I having pride in yourself is not a bad thing and you can be proud of who you are. I am proud not because I sleep with men, but because I treat people with respect and dignity, I proud because I give back to my community and help people out, I proud because I am not ashamed anymore of my sexual orientation, I proud because when I told my friends I was gay not one rejected me because they love me as a person, I am proud because I treat my mother right and she is proud of all my accomplishments, I am proud because all my nieces and nephews call me their favorite uncle. I am not proud to be gay but I am not ashamed of it either.

People have these events because they have been in the closet and now it is time for them to show whom they are, everyone does this in their own personal way. Mine is not to march but to be a good person and to show people around me that being gay is not such a bad or freaky thing. I cannot figure out from your post if you are anti gay or anti pride or both. But I do not think you should put someone down for their beliefs until you MARCHED A MILE IN THEIR SHOES IN A GAY PRIDE PARADE…I just wanted to say that…I am so stupid sometimes, but what ever.

dude, I love this arguement. I totally agree. It applies to nationality and race and even sexual orientation, hell it even applies to sports. "We're the best country in the world", or "We won", or "My race is responsible for all these discoveries adn inventions". blah blah blah, what a bunch of horseshit. There's nothing wrong with gay pride. Be proud of who you are, and show it to the world in a group march if you like. Fine with me.

On a side note, I actually think that these events are one step forward and two steps back for the gay community. It does them more harm than good as it relates to them being accepted and recognized as a normal part of society.
