Whats the point of mariage?

i've seen couples who are truly in love (not gooshy, schmoopy boo-boo bear love, but laugh and cry together type love)

and they have a wonderful marriage

it has to be for the right reasons and planned accordingly

so once i do fall in love i plan to marry and start a family

because in the end it's all about relationships and leaving what you've worked for...behind

if two people have a child together and share a life together whether they get married or not is arbitrary, but particularly if you have children, it is VERY stupid and thoughtless to not have your estate properly set up to simplify transfer of everything and lay out who you want to be responsible for the kids, etc. Also is thoughtless to not have a life insurance policy.

Maybe things are different in your state but here it's very simple, it doesnt matter if both get married or not cause the kids will get all the benefits from the law anyway.

Seriously, this is not a thread to bash being married, I just want to know what the point is. Is it religion more than anything? Im in a serious relationship with my girl for the past 7 years, we have a baby together, we live together and she wants to get married. Im not sure if I want to or ever will want to so Im at a crossroad. It feels like our relationship is to the point were you either split or make the next move. Not sure what to do. I also dont want to be alone when Im in my 50's neither.

My SO and I have a 9 year old, been living together for 7 years. My son is of the age that he knows what being married is and that most of his friends parents are married. By the same token, he knows that we aren't, and that presents a problem at times when someone asks why we haven't married in front of him.
To protect him from the things that could be uncomfortable for him, we've decided to get married. The stability factor for him, not having parents with different last names, etc. And, it's the right thing to do.
We'll be getting married in Maui on 7/7/07, come join the party!

Most men marry for someone to take care of them, in every aspect of the meaning.Sex, clean my shitty drawers,etc.

Most women marry with the "stoopid" idea that she's found her Prince Charming.Grow up girls, Prince Charming is dead.

I married because he is someone I enjoyed being with, shared the same values,knew he'd make a great dad. I CHOSE WELL.

We none are perfect, but it takes a real man and woman to respect one another to work thru problems.

Marriage ain't easy..Nothing in life worth having is easy.
