Whats The deal with eating Protein Alone

thats interesting, when i followed a high carb high protein low fat protocol (probably a 40/40/20) i was never really ill when i dropped carbs to < 25% i couldnt sleep well and got the flu twice in a space of 3 months

I think the deal with the no protein alone mainly applies to fast protein (whey), they are oxidized so fast by the body that the body uses them for energy instead of muscle building purposes. It also depends on your goals, but I think you should almost always add carbs or fat to protein. That way the protein can go where you want it to, the muscle. The fat will slow down absorbtion, which in all cases (except post workout) is a good thing. The carbs will supply the body with fuel so the protein can work on getting into a positive nitrogen balance.

One thing that so many people don't take into acct. is that most of us eat every 2-3 hours. Yes, whey is used fast, but, it's still not fully digested after 2 hours. And since most of us have been doing this for a while, our bodies have adapted tothat speed of digestion/absorption.
Another consideration is whether it is pre or post-workout. I think we all know the importance of carbs to spare muscle then. The rest of the day, I believe protein/fats(no carbs) are fine, and still preserve muscle).

Him1, like I said it depends on your goals. Yes, we do all eat every 2-3 hours. To get the most out of your protein it helps to combine it with another energy source, especially if you aren't trying to get extremely lean. If you are trying to build muscle taking protein alone is a joke, there aren't enough calories. My point about whey by itself is that it is ineffecient because it raises blood levels so fast the body can't accomodate and it just burns it as fuel. Thus, my reasoning to add something to it to slow release (fat). Casein (or a combo) by itself is okay because the release is much slower and keeps a constant influx of amino acids into the bloodstream that the body can more efficiently use. Does that make any sense? Let me know!
