What's the confederate flag really mean?

I heard it wasnt a symbol of slavery, so what is it then and is our black brothers and sisters offended by such a flag????

"If any State in the Union will declare that it prefers separation" over "Union," "I have no hesitation in saying, 'let us separate.'"

--Thomas Jefferson

Simple: Rebel flag represented the CONFEDERACY....The Confederacy supported slavery, thus the confederacy supported bondage, murder, and brutality...

Hence, the Confederate flags equals all those things as well.

Besides, it doesn't really matter, blacks are winning the battle to have the remaining confederate flags removed from the few state capitols that still have the flags flying above its halls.

It's a battle well worth winning.

:D

Abraham Lincoln dealt the most serious blow to the rights of the individual States in our Republic when he denied them the right to secede from teh union. He set us up for the Big Brother, big-government we have now in which Federal courts routinely over rule States' decisions.
Today the Confederate flag stands as a reminder of how the Constitution has been twisted by teh Federal government to suit its own goals, and how we are now a Constitutional Republic in name only. Of how we are now a Federal Government in which decisions are made by mob rule.
Slavery was an issue during teh Civil War, but it was never the issue. Why did so many free black people willingly fight for the Confederacy? Do you know how prevalent slave-owning was in teh North?

*Always beware whenever anyone offers you a "simple answer" for anything.*

Another can of worms opened.
The flag means lots of different things for many people. For the blacks that have past family members that were slaves. It is a sign of slavery. For my family it is different. My ancestors that were in the war were poor southern share croppers. The owned much of nothing. Fought for what they had. The war was fought for many reasons. The old flag was however not the flag that flew during the war. That flag was adopted in the 60's I believe. I liked the old flag and wanted to keep it but respect the views of others.

Lincoln's Views? "I am not in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office...." 9/15/1858 campaign speech
"I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery...." 3/4/1861 First Inaugural Address
"I am a little uneasy about the abolishment of slavery in this District [of Columbia]...." 3/24/1862 letter to Horace Greeley
"If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it...." 8/22/1862 letter to Horace Greeley, New York Tribune editor

The emancipation proclimation freed no slaves. Since the southern states had left the union, they would not free slaves just because the union president demanded it.

It represents far to many rednecks! Lets be proud and drive around with a confederate flag in our back window!! Freakin' idiots!

Whenever a complicated issue (i.e. The "Civil War") is reduced to soundbites (i.e. "it was about slavery"), it loses much. But Amerikans seem to prefer the issues simple and black & white, with "Good" guys and "bad" guys.

Weapon X seems to be a man of reason,i like that.
On the other hand beware of RyanH hes an idiot and just runs off at the mouth.

i don't guess most of you have heard the saying: "heritage not hate"? i'm from the south and damn proud of it. i think a lot of southerners get a bad rap from all the toothless, ingnorant people that supposedly represent everyone from the south. i however do have a college education as do many individuals from the south. so if anyone doesn't like southerners, YOU CAN SUCK MY FUCKING DICK!!!

THE SOUTH SHALL RISE AGAIN.

The Confederacy was actually amazingly successful and were unjustly put down, in direct violation of the Constitution, and have been unfairly demonized ever since.
In fact it is still politically correct to make fun of southerners as rednecks, ignorant, inbred, etc.
I'll tell you, I'm from the Bronx, and I knew enough idiots, racists (black and white), etc. to balance their compatriots in the South.
The Confederate battle flags stand today as a symbol of States' Rights, even to a born Yankee like me.

Right---I'm sure the Confederate flag represents state rights----the right to enslave its citizens.

Silly argument.

Well, it represents to me Daisy Duke, Boss Hawg, Cleetus and the good ol' General Lee with those two fags in it jumping over shit. hehe

the NAACP (negros against all caucasian people) can have all the flags taken down that they please, I will never take mine down and all you people that don't or have never lived in the South and are taking part in this discussion can KISS MY ASS!!! You don't know what the fuck it means to us southerners.

I have lived in the south all my life but, I hate to see these guys with the flag like Freak Daddy said on their truck window. You might as well add up the numbers on their license plates and you would come up with their IQ.

When I see that Flag I think of the Dukes of Hazzard.

KInda like when alot of you think of me and Canada you think of igloos, beer, and hot chicks that say "Noo doot aboot it":D

I wore 5 strands of rebel flag beads on burbon street last year. So did my friends. My friends got pushed around and had shit talked to them, but for some reason, nobody had the balls to talk shit to me, go figure.

It's funny how 'tolerant' liberals are when they see those hateful Confederate flags or someone with an "NRA Instructor" t-shirt.
