What's the best cpu security software out there?

What are you looking for exactly? Protection from virii or from someone hacking into your computer? If you're worried about hackers, software based applications really won't do it. An intermediate hacker can usually get through software firewalls fairly easily. Of course you can't keep big brother out at all. For virus protection, I like pc-cillan but norton and mcafee are fine also. It doesn't matter the brand as much as it depends on you constantly updating the virus definitions.

Bilestew, see what you can find. I have a membership with them so I have free updates for like another year.

I need something like Norton Systemworks that checks virii, runs system integrity scans and checks to make sure everything is optimal.

On a side note, my porn collection is quite impressive.

With the corporate edition, you don't have to renew or anything. Free updates for as long as the company is still around. And this edition runs all those checks you're looking for. Also, if you want a good firewall protection, Black Ice Defender is good.

I'll look for it and see if I can find it.

FreeBSD.

You're talking about Windows? Don't talk about security in the same sentence.

Digger is on the money although OpenBSD is reputedly the safest micro OS of all.

For a good balance between all-out security and convenience I settle for a mac.

If your only real concern is being hacked while you are simply connected to the 'Net and not being hacked through your browser then get a hardware router, disable DHCP and run Firefox or Opera as your browser. Never click attachments or exe files unless you are very sure they are safe and never open IE.

Dude... you cannot start computer-related threads without consulting me...

I fully endorse Norton Internet Security, I have it around here, and I have a patch to get free updates on all the signatures, virus-definitions, etc until 2043...

Nothing gets around that shit, firewall, antivirus, email-protection, real-time scanning, script-blocking, popups, etc...

I even have it online ready for download... :p

we need to talk donations, PM for details (only if you are willing to part with 30.000 after taxes, though, a mere token of goodwill)

BTW, did I mention the patch is for LiveUpdate? meaning that any Symantec products you have (Norton Ghost, etc) that use LiveUpdate to get the subscribed updates will get the full updates till 2043... damn, this is a sweet deal sawastea, but hurry, only till today midnight... 4 more hours to go

"No Source Posting" applies to warez too, P'man.

notice I'm not posting it...if there's interest on the other side, I plan on taking it to a private communication method

Solid advice here....

Add .COM, .BAT, .PIF to the list of DON'T Clicks.

I don't like McAfee and/or Symantic....just too bloated and "pretty" for my taste...I've got better things to do with my RAM.

I use Kaspersky AV and Outpost FW....I've NEVER had any problems.

Annoyingly, very, very annoyingly, Windows hides a .pif extension from a filename.

Obviously, I have explorer set to show all file extensions but got caught once by a .pif which looked like a .txt file. I noticed nonsense happening and saw that I'd been infected with the Fable virus. Half a day wasted while I nuked the OS and reinstalled everything. I think it was about then that I moved to Linux thinking in terms of final straws and broken camel's backs.
