I have a good relationship with my parents. My father is 72 and my mother is 68. My mother is in good health but my father's health has been spiraling downwards these last few years. He either has Alzhiemers or Dementia and also has emphazema(sp?). I really don't know which one he has and my mother will not have him tested because I think she is in denial! Anyway, when I was in high school my grandmother came to live with us after her husband died and things worked out real well until she died several years later.
My parents live in the same town with me and I have a growing concern for their well being. They live in a pretty large house but it is about ten miles out in the country and really they have no use for a house that large. Recently, my wife and I looked a house that was in town but secluded with 4.5 acres of land and two ponds and several storage buildings and located about two hundred yards from the best elementary school in our district. The house is 5000 square feet with the majority of it on one level(It does have a finished basement with 3 fairly large rooms that open up into the backyard with the ponds). The house only has three bedrooms but the bottom floor rooms could be converted into bedrooms fairly easy for my two kids. I asked them if they would be willing to sell their house and come live with us in this new house. I have a wonderful wife who is eager to see this happen as well as I am too! My two daughters think it would be great too. My mother, who makes all of the decisions, doesn't really like the idea because she will basically be giving up her freedom.
I asked her if I could come talk to her with my father present and just hear me out. She said she would but don't expect miracles. I'm afraid something is going to happen in a few years and she wished she had taken me up on the offer. We live in a 2500 sq. ft. house and don't have the room for one of them to move in if this happened. We do have an "assisted living home" in town but the monthly costs are like $3500 per month. Very costly!
What I am asking from everybody here is, What are your thoughts? Give me some pros and cons but remember I have a good relationship with my parents and I do love them dearly! By the way, I'm 40 and my wife is 39 and the kids are 9 and 5.
