and the other side of the coin is that this is an investment that hopefully pays off with a stable middle east and stable gas prices

Actually Bino, the way I see it, he went to Congress pleading for permission to start the war... now Congress wants to STOP that war and call the original mandate obsolete and what do they get? Veto after Veto and him replying that is not Congress job to make decisions concerning the war.
so theoretically, it's not a one man show, but practically, as long as he decides to exercises his veto-power and pee on the Congress majority it is. I can foresee Congress being more cautious about giving persmission for this sort of things in the future, seeing how this turned out.
As for this being an investment, I haven't really see any improvement in Middle East affairs, they are still blowing themselves (and your troops) to pieces at whatever chance they get and that is not going to change whether you leave tomorrow, in 2008 or in 2200. It's an investment for the contractors getting a piece of that pie though... but a better return (for example, without dead troops) would've been to simply give the money to the contractors and be done with it.
And the gas prices, you still have that fucker Chavez sitting on top of that pile of oil that supplies 20% of the US imports. (fuck, I hate that guy) OPEC will be worth keeping an eye on if Chavez continues buying support across the 3rd world (so far he has spent US$ 18.000 MILLIONS in gifts to other countries, while in Venezuela hospitals close cause they have no supplies)
