What would you do in this situation...

We have summer help and he is sitting in the cube behind me. He's the son of one of the exe dr's in the company. All he does all day long is sit and talk to his girlfriend on his cellphone and stay on etrade. He has come in late the past 3 days and isnt supposed to leave until 4 if he comes in at 8, but i bet you he is leaving at 4 no matter how long of a lunch he takes or what time he comes in (he's hourly). He's only 18. Not that there is much for him to do, but if hes going to be paid to work here for the summer, he ought to work. He's supposed to be doing the things that I either dont want to do or do not have time to do b/c I'm busy with a server or laptop. Should I say something about it to my mgr? He's here until late August.

Don't rat him out. He's only there until August and then he'll be busting his ass in school. Let him enjoy his Summer a little.

On one hand I can think of it that way, but instead of wasting money paying him to do shit, they could give it to me. I guess I'm one of those by the rules at work and he just sits and talks on his cell phone.

Is the money that he is being paid with comming out of your pocket? If not ...who cares

Ask him to do the shit you don't want to do, and if he doesn't do it...simply explain that this is a job not a playground and he WILL get fired

Bro, plain and simple - fire his ass. I've fired two of my clients' sons off of projects. Each time I told the dad straight out the kid was acting like a deadbeat - and each time the dad thanked me for not letting him get away with that crap.

Good fathers do not want to raise irresponsible boys. They want to raise responsible young men.

I agree. If the guy's just a general drain on the company, it's not your problem, it's daddy's. But if he's not doing what you need him to do, that's different. If it gets bad enough to where you need to talk to your boss about it, make sure you limit your complaint to what he's not doing for you. Don't bitch and moan about when he comes and goes or etrade or any of that. Trust me, it would only make you look like a whiner.

if you are his supervisor, or are above him, give him some work to do. if not, blow it off, its the way some small companies are, you get dead weight to support the higher ups families. its only temporary anyway.

i'm above him. he's supposed to be my assistant for the summer. its blue cross blue shield, its not a small company. i'll just give him a little more work to occupy his time. thanks fellas.
