I know 5x5 is an amazing training cycle and im on one right now and enjoying my results thus far. But before this 5x5 was needsize's if im not mistaken. then west side was popular before that but did i miss anything else? What else has been popular here?

This isn't a response to your question, but you're completely missing the point if you're thinking of "the 5x5" as a trendy, immutable program. Read PB's posts in the 5x5-related thread a little lower on the page.

no no, i understand this, I know the 5x5 is not new or "trendy" (actually the opposite), but right now on EF 90 percent of the training forum uses it, this was not the case before.

i wouldn't say 90% - it's actually difficult to say, since alot of bro's don't post up their routines/journals... but yea there are alot who are on 5x5. HIT was pretty popular too for some time a few years ago... thankfully you rarely if ever see HITers around nowadays.

A lot of people use "it" as written b/c it works. But a lot also use what they LEARNED from "it" and are still training using the same big principles behind the 5x5, but their training does not look exactly like the 5x5 as written. Read this:

Before "it" showed up, a lot of guys shotgunned multitudinous exercises and set/rep schemes at their bodies and hoped for the best week-to-week. FLEX light, I imagine. 10 sets of different types of curls on Mondays. 8 sets of pulldowns with various odd-shaped handles. etc. etc. And guaged progress based on soreness, mental excitedness of each workout, pump, whether or not their workout was deemed hardcore by the masses, etc. Lots of solid indicators of progress like the above.

I agree pb. The pump and the soreness are an obvious and respectable way of measuring an increase in performance.

really - who needs to train legs
yeah... fuck that. I just put 2 inches... on each leg, squating 3x week...

Who needs 'em.. I fit into "normal" jeans when they were smaller anyway :p

Maybe I need to do cable reverse crossovers on a stability ball while holding my crotch bilaterals?

I don't train legs, I think I've given it up for Winter.

I started posting here just a few weeks before the 5x5 thread started. Oddly, my mental filters are working as well now as they did then and I have no idea what the norm was at the time. I was skimming through the forum and spotted a post from madcow outlining the 5x5. The whole layout and ethos stood out like a sore thumb and I started on my first 5x5 run the following week.

Anyway, the Plats amongst you may be able to skim back through the archives to late 2004 to see what was around at the time.
