What to do about an ingrown toenail??

Don't remember the last time I have had one, the one I have hurts mildly when touched and my big toe is somewhat swollen and red ... this sounds ridiculous but someone tell me what to do..do I soak it and try to dig it out? Leave it..?

This is easy..
get a bowl with rubbing alcohol and dip your toe in there. That will clean it. Then take a razor and make a small slice along the side. It will bleed a little but it will come out and you will save yourself a couple weeks of mild pain.

This works with warts too.

a) a doctor would laugh you out of his/her office for coming in with an ingrown toenail unless your toe was gangrenous..

b) soak your foot in warm water for about 5-10 mins... then gently take a nail file and run it underneath where it's ingrown to remove that part of the nail that is ingrown.

No man.. hahaha I mean where the skin meets the outside of the nail. Then you can pull it out of there. It will hurt.. but after you are done the pain will subside.

I have had it done in the doctor's office and that is what they do. Hey, call me a pussy! Hurts for a bit but when it subsides, it does feel alot better. Good luck Frack!

well I can tell you that alot of people arent educated on this issue, by their posts, for the ones who said go to the doctor, they are correct, but what you need to do is just have the doctor procede with surgery to remove it, I had to have one cut out like 8 years ago, the shit hurt but it was much better once it got cut out. I wouldnt try to cut it out yourself, because you might not get the whole nail out, and plus the doctor can do it and cut all the shit out, bro dont wait any longer, its not gonna get better, when mine was active, I couldnt even walk, so bro just call the doc and tell him to schedule for an appt. to cut it out, dont let them jive you with ointments or soaking tactics, cause more than likely if it goes down its gonna cause problems later!

Yep, that is EXACTLY what i do to fix it. And it sure hurts as you do it, but when you are done the pain is gone almost instantly.

Yes.. but planters warts are the only kind you need to cut off.

I have performed 3 minor surgery on myself. One was the wart removal.. the other two were stiches. Oh yeah.. and once I set my hand when I broke it.. and also set and made a cast for my left wrist when I broke that.... the warts were nothing compared to that.... I have a friend who removed 2 teeth and also burned off some moles on his neck and chest.

frackal, if it is becoming a recurring problem just go to a podiatrist and have it permanently fixed. You can cut it out yourself as others have said but it will just keep coming back. If you have the doctor do it he will kill the nail bed so that it will not grow back.

If you had clear fluid come out then you have an infection, and chances are that you have reached the point of no return - - have a doc treat the nail. I had an ingrown nail for a better part of a year - - I messed with it on a weekly basis and the bastard never healed. Trust me when i say that 30 minutes in the doctors office and I was running a 10K three days later with no pain.

i had an ingrown toenail. the doctor doesn't laugh at you for it. he may try to rip you off though (mine did, the asshole).


if it is a long term one (one that will not go away when you cut it) what they do is this. at least they did this for me.


1. put you on a course of antibiotics to clear up the infection around the nail.

2. anesthatize the toe, then cut the edge of the nail out

3. put acid on the edge of your toenail to kill off all the cells that would let your toenail grow out sideways again.
