What the hell was that?

As I was working out in the gym today, doing the flyes-machine, on my last rep (number 8 I think), I exerted myself to the max. Then suddenly a kinda bang happens in my backhead and it hurt pretty much. It was like a headache in a half second, never experienced this before. I had that headache for an hour or so afterwards..

What happened? Something serious?

:elephant:

I've had that happen on behind the neck lat pulldowns....that's why I don't do em anymore. It's a nerve in the back of your neck that got pinched....sends a nasty shockwave up into your braincase.

Any dizziness or lightheadedness? Is your head still hurting at all?If that happens again,I would have it checked by a professional ASAP.Had a family member who had a brain aneurism, who described a 'pop' in his head just prior to a splitting head-ache.Could be something else entirely(like a nerve),but I would always play it safe.

Nerve, nerve moving/diplaced, small blood vessel burst etc... Those are the possibilities. Yes, you could bust a vessel in your head without suffering the effects of a stroke. It's actually common. If you feel any differant, do what Huckster said and go to a doctor.

This happened to me when I was driving home one night and I yawned. I paniced and went to see my DR the next day....had a CT scan and it was nothing.
My Dr said it could have been just a nerve "extending"!
As long as the headache is gone, I think it's ok!

don't aneurisms put you down immediately?

Not necessarily. You can have a smaller size vessel burst in the cranium, and it can take a few hours for it flood the cavity, which in turn presses in on the brain.A huge vessel would undoubtedly cause near immediate short-circuiting/death.

Okay thanks guys. I barely feel any headache. I'll post up tomorrow. Don't think it will continue.

"Weight-lifter's exertion headache".... that's the term that a top-notch neurologist told my bud when the same thing happened to him.... he felt/heard a loud pop in his head when he was training... he was MRI'd and everything checked out ok.... the doctor then opened up a book and had my read read the symptoms of the condition that she felt he had... apparently it's pretty normal and in most cases, harmless..... she prescribed him indomethacin and he's been ok since...

I was leg presing one day and the exact same thing happened. Head hurt for about three hours then went away. The pop that i felt was also in the back of my head. Still dont know what it was but there are no lasting effects....I dont think.

you slipped a vertabre causing a pinched nerve, it'll eventually go away but a good chiro should be able to put it back in place and relieve the nerve. It's not good to leave them like that because they ca pull the other vertabre out of alignment. I use to get that when ever i did shrugs or shoulder raises because I would keep my head down. Just keep your head up and straight and you should be fine on the fly's.

Same Thing Happend 2 Me Before In The Middle Of A Preacher Curl (going Heavy) Freaked Me The Hell Out, Did You See Stars Afterward? I Did, I Thought It Was Maybe Caused By Not Breathing Right.

OK, that happens to me, I keep my head down when I do shrugs, and when I go heavy i get that electrical pain in my back that shoots. Now I know to keep my head up.

Had it happen to me in high school doing the exact same thing. I went to the doctor and they perscribed me flexiril (muscle relaxer). Told me not to work out for 10 days. I tried to work out after a week and the headache came back. Took another 2 weeks off and was fine. Everyone is different. See your doctor. Good luck.
