what the hell to do

I got a new job on Saturday and Sunday for 8 hours each. I stand/walk for the entire 8 hours. It's killing my legs because they get real sore when i get off of work.

Today I am coming off a 2 week break of working out and still don't feel like working out. where'd that extreme want of working out go?? lol I usually have it after taking a break for a week. Sooo with the legs killing me thing, will that eventually go away? Squatting and deadlifting is going to kill me

Uh, get a new job? There's nothing about being 16 that requires you to work at a grocery store (just a guess...isn't that everybody's first job? ;)).

A more serious answer, albeit one that doesn't address the issue of your job sapping your desire to work out:

Put together a routine in which the amount and timing of leg volume are compatible with the job. Having your heavy squat day on Monday, and perhaps even squatting thrice per week, might not work. So you could do something where you have two upper-body days and two lower-body days, with Monday either an off or upper day.

Also, your legs will probably become conditioned to it to some extent, although, as I mentioned, it does negate the rationale of using the weekend for recovery on a MWF program.

well it's the only job i can get right now, and i need the money (car insurance, I hate depending on everybody for rides) anddddd no it's not at a grocery store!!!! lol, it's at dunkin donuts.

i'm thinking maybe squat 2x a week instead of 3x taking the wednesday squat out. what do you think?

Hey, I worked retail for quite a few years....it sucks but eventually you get used to it. If you are at a counter all day, make sure they have a rubber mat to stand on, it helps a lot. Also, buy some GOOD insoles for your shoes, so you have some cushion while you walk around. At first, I wouldn't do squats mon/fri.....try tues and thurs. That way your legs aren't killing you when you have to work.

Dunkin' Dougnuts can be the best thing for a squat, lol, provided you eat enough of them to improve your leverages.....but seriously, you aren't used to being on your feet all day, but still, it is Dunkin Doughnuts and you're a kid, stop being a pansy and suck it up, there are 45 year old guys who work factory jobs 50-60 hrs a week and they still train hard.....not giving you a hard time, just putting it in perspective for you.

My advice is suck it up......if it just isn't possible, I'd suggest something like CS said. You can squat and pull Tues/Fri and Press Mon/Thurs possibly.....but honestly put it into perspective and look at all the guys 2 and 3 times your age who do construction, manual labor, work in factories etc etc for a whole lot longer than 16 hrs a week.....grow some hair on your balls and do it up.

you have to think how much more experience they have with being on their feet all day, this being my first job, my body isn't at all used to standing that long. I'll try the squat 3 times a week thing still then.

You'll adjust to it. Everything is hard at first. Your squat poundage may take a hit at first, but it'll come back. It'll just take a while to get conditioned.

And, +1 to what biggT said. It's hard but shouldn't derail you.

hahaha.....is this a joke?

I agree w/ Biggt. Just do it - you will be all the more proud and you will absolutly get used to it. At your age the more you can mentally overcome the easier things will be when you are out on your own.

Good luck - lift heavy and hard - eat and take advantage of your youth. EVERYONE on this board wishes they would have strated squatting 3x a week at 16yrs.

I think BiggT nailed it, suck it up. At your age, there's no reason standing for 8 hrs should stop you from doing anything. Also, get some comfortable shoes with plenty of support.

You can always find any number of excuses to not workout.
Go try telling that excuse to a guy that works in a steel mill, a carpenter, roofer, etc. that still bust his ass in the gym. Like Nike said, "Just do it." Your body will adjust. Looks like you will not be posting any threads complaining about not gaining weight with that job :)

Your feet will stop hurting in two weeks. Ur body adjusts. Some people work on their feet 12 hours a day 6 days a week or more. Think before you complain about your own situation man.

thanks everyone, I just don't want to be overtraining at all. If there wasn't such thing as overtraining your body i'd be in the gym every single day lol

Exactly my thoughts every time I read one of oso's threads. Keep working hard and eating, dude, and you'll look/lift like BiggT by the time you're out of college.

Also, good luck staying sane at Dunkin' Donuts. I'd probably be fired within a week from a job like that for, if not insulting the customers, at least having a constant look of revulsion on my face every time one of them waddled in to buy something.

lol I've not run into any dickheads at work yet. I also hate donuts now, just from seeing them so often.

BiggT, when you were a kid gaining weight, did you ever diet down a little bit? Question is open to everyone..I'm just wondering whether it'd be better for me to gain as much muscle as possible while i'm a kid but get up to like 280 pounds of muscle and fat OR should I drop some fat here and there?

Your biggest obstacle will be a balance between playing (training or other stuff) and sleeping. Sleep gives you power, especially when you're working 30 hours plus. Too much work and play upsets homeostatis = stress & destruction of the central nervous system. Bear this in mind for the future.

At your fine age you'll be able to run home from work, and do god knows what else; so long as you don't start partying too hard, strike a balance, and you'll win in life.

Just don't be a one shot wonder or a wannabe like a million others- you know, get some stats other than pork consumption and strength.

Oso....I never dieted down in high school, but it is because I never had to..... in 8th grade I was 5'9 or 5'10 and about 165, when I graduated I was 6' and about 235, I fought for every last ounce of it, lol, and I never had any issues with bodyfat (again, my goal wasn't to be ripped, but I don't think my waist was ever more then 34-35 inches or so in high school)....I wouldn't suggest a pure 'cut' for a guy your age trying to gain muscle.....if you start getting 'sloppy' I would first suggest cleaning up a little shit here and there, still eat plenty of good calories, and try to recomp......basically if added junk is causing too much of a bodyfat gain, reduce it until you like what you see better.

Again, with the P/T job.....you're too young to sweat that stuff.....your training is in check, you're not doing anything idiotic, so don't even give the job a second thought, you're entirely too young for life's little stresses.....you'll be just fine.
