ok what about this, i have always varied dumbells for chest, and never done barbell bench press. i had done this because i had always got better results, until i decided to change it up. now when i started bench, i only hit 150 for max because my neuro-muscular function was not used to that form of press, but i was hitting the 90lbs dumbell for 7-9 reps a workout with good form. was i not ready for gear then?? if you answer is no, then you are very wrong, lol. my bench did go up drastically since then after the neuro got used to it, to where it doubled, but at that point, where i could only do 150lbs????
