What Motivates you?

Just curious....

I think everyone has their own reasons or deep rooted things that drive them. It's pretty cool looking at people like professional athletes and entrepreneurs to evaluate what drove them to be great or to get where they are.

I've had a very long struggle in terms of trying to find ways to motivate myself at different stages of my life. But now i realized there are two particular situations where I become so determined and relentless regardless of the obstacles

1.) If someone is completely dependent on me to survive (i.e. financially). I don't want a kid right now, but to tell you the truth, if I did have one in the past few years...i'd probably be a millionaire right now

2.) If i feel underappreciated or slighted or someone says/thinks i'm not good enough. Whether it's by a job or a relationship or whatever....
I noticed this is a huge one for pro athletes in particular, and basically there are countless examples of people who made a career out of it. Proving people wrong is probably one of the most powerful driving forces. That's why you see people with natural talent loaf a lot until they're pushed

Right now #2 has sparked a huge fire in me and something that i haven't felt in awhile. i became a bit content and complacent for a while. so i know for me, that's something i need to keep with me at all times. i've tried a lot of different ways or methods or ways of thinking, but really those 2 circumstances that spark me.

a lot of people use fear too...but for others fear can be crippling. fear of not being good enough or fear of poverty has driven a lot of wealthy people, but probably not in the most healthy manner.

so what drives you?

Pussy, my kids and traveling...love my life

Well being in shape will keep my ass alive at work, aswell as my crew.

but I also love the confidence and how good I feel on a daily basis from working out.

Working out motivates me because it makes me feel healthy
Many years ago, I lost all my motivation because of illness, this is when I started taking courses towards being a Naturopath. Now, 4 yrs later, I have my own client base business and starting another one.
Though, I'm terrified, I'm making little money in my first few months (nothing like I was making as a corporate buyer), I'm on my own, I'm faced with a lot but my motivation comes from being more content than I've ever been in my life. I like this feeling so want it to last.

So basically what motivated me was my failing health, my passion for healing and my need to find contentment, which I didn't have much of before.
In all honesty, Al Anon gave me the courage and motivation to change my life. So at least the ex addict added some value to my life b/c I would have never walking into an Al Anon meeting otherwise.

I had this talk with a girl I manage at work recently. For me, it's one thing and one thing only - being better than everyone else. Definitely not saying I've achieved that (I suppose if I did, I'd be satisfied and thus no longer motivated), but that's what makes me move. Someone else gets props for something, somebody gets promoted, whatever - I want that shit to be me. Secondarily, the high of achieving. You get a taste of it and you end up chasing it. Probably what sales guys go through all their lives.

that used to be it for me actually...but i found i didn't get enough satisfaction out of that and it made me too "me and against the world" ish. I had a pretty warped view of things and I'd become too competitive when I didn't need to be.

but yeah, achievement is great momentum. the only thing is it's almost impossible to get it back once you lose it unless something life altering happens.

Yeah, it definitely needs to be a healthy version of all that. I used to be the same way, but somehow came around to more of a "love me some healthy competition...it's good for everyone" type mindset. Still catch myself slipping into the old me every now and then, though.

deep bro, deep

I get motivated by paying the fuckin bills and not having enough money left to buy dumb shit.

I am motivated by thinking I'm helping someone, it really helps me feel satisfied with things if I think that's what I'm doing. Lol. Sometimes it takes some mental gymnastics to do that, but it makes me feel better so...lol. I am not competitive and though competition might get results out of me, it's not the best way for me to be motivated or to motivate myself if it can be avoided because it causes me stress. I'm generally cooperative and don't like the me against everyone mindset that others seem to thrive in. I guess I'm thinking in more of a big picture way than the OP is going, though. I do like figuring out what motivates other people.

CW your #1 is right on for me, too. Having someone depend on you really lights that fire to do the best you can so they can have the best of everything you can give them.

fuck all that algebra

Having a POS boss I hated put me over the edge and motivated me.
He has since died.(33) Now it is a weird feeling. I thank him for the motivation, but when I see people with pictures of him still on facebook I can't help but remember the hatred.
