What kind of motor oil do you put in your car?

Do you exceed 10k miles in 6 months?

You should change oil after 6 months no matter what your mileage is.

I have had my car for about 8 months and I've put on about 13K miles. I'll probably put a total of 20K on it at the end of my first full year with the car. I have never been in a situation with a car where I had to change the oil based on the amount of time it's been in the car.

I'm sure there's someone that will say you don't have to change the oil every 6 months or even every year if you aren't putting the miles on the engine, but I havn't seen anything on that.

My gf's grandmother has her oil changed once a year, no more, no less. She puts about 2K miles on her car a year at the most. Her last car she got with 31K miles and it got totalled right around 60k miles. She got the car in 91 and it was totalled in Dec 02.

She drives a lot less now than she did just a few years ago. She bought a 1 year old Olds Alero with 15-16K miles on it in Jan 03. I don't think she's broken 20K miles yet.

You should change your oil every 6 months regardless of mileage due to the condensation that forms in your crankcase.

Try telling that to my gf's grandmother. Her mechanic has told her that her 1 year intervals are fine considering how little she drives. She's been taking her car to the same shop a really long time, probably 20 years if not more.
