What kind of Dog do you have?

I'm a little disappointed that less than half of the above responses were pitbulls. And lmfao at the fag and his pomeranians.

I'm a little disappointed that one of the responders that did have pit bulls mentioned that they were viscous and needed to be kept chained up. They only end up that way if you breed them that way. No soapbox, but pit bulls can be lovely, sweet, amazing dogs and it seems so thuggish to raise them that way.

^ Agreed. I worked at a pitbull rescue a few years ago and the only vicious ones were that way for a reason. I've been around plenty of loving, gentle pits that wouldn't hurt a fly. I hate that this breed has developed such a reputation because of sucky owners.

Pits are easy to train and great dogs, but as with any breed, they require a certain type of owner. If you are not capable of training a pit, or you think you should train them to be aggressive, you shouldn't be allowed to own or especially raise one.

I was joking. Guess i should've let yall know. I figured someone would've ripped into me for that post but I forgot about the thread. My pits are actually the opposite. My 110 lb wife actually handles them more than I do. They're very well behaved for us. Only problem is the jumping and licking people if we let them get excited. It just takes consistent training and socialization.

But to Liquid...I'd recommend any bull breed if you want a guard dog. Just have to be firm and consistent and socialize them.

Great points on the hybrids. Anyone have a German Shepherd?

Any recommendation on training? Any good DVDs or book that I can watch/read?

Something along the lines of a guard dog. Growl on command. Etc.

Yes, and they need a lot of attention! The most sociable, brave, active, and playful dog I have ever had. (Granted I had a Samoyed/Lab cross and a Sharpei/pit cross before. Both a bit anti social.)
My dog is just naturally a great guard dog. Barks and growls at all the right times just naturally.
And he is extremely protective while on leash, especially if I am approached by a stranger late at night or in the early morning.- I don't think you would actually have to train that aspect due to their instinctual protective nature. God help anyone who actually tried to break into my home ;)
A word of warning though- you can't leave a German Shepherd tied up as a guard dog or it will turn sour on you- they are meant to be part of the family, not left outside.
There's a good site that goes over some training FAQs for German Shepherds
Leerburg | Dog Training Articles

It spends a good deal of time talking about dominance, training, explaining behaviour and drive, and behavioural problems.

Funny thing is you almost always hear their owners vehemently defend them.

They try to always blame abusive owners for their actions and say as long as you have them as a puppy and train them you're fine. Bullshit.

Pits are one of the most animal aggressive breeds. That's why other peoples pets are always killed by pits.
