I've always wanted some gallium to play with -- just like enough grams to be sizable enough to play with and stuff. It's legal to buy without a permit, too, (in the U.S.) but it was ~$30 for I think in the 20g-50g area, and that's not much.
The super-cooled superconductivity stuff can be really interesting, and is pretty big field in both industry as well as research (not even getting into the coolness of the experimental charataristics of superfluid helium).
Actually, depending on price, thiis is something I'm gonna bring up to our Outreach Coordinator for the huge outside Purdue show-off-what's-cool-about-your-major thing coming up this spring. I did the liquid nitrogen ice cream thing last year... the kids loved it (free sugar food!) but there were not nearly enough safety precautions set up with the bowls of the liquid N sitting around and OF COURSE, ever kid wants to stick his finger in it. If this kinda thin's in our budget and we can borrow *steal* some of the supplies from the engineering dorks next door, this would be kinda nifty, and fat-free, too.
