What is this insanity?

I'm tiny too. 5'3". I maintained an energetic 105-108 lbs on 800 calories a day while dancing/training all day. I think your body just adjusts and conserves energy. I've been questioning this though for a long time....no one has respinded to my posts though. Perhaps we're all confused about individual's caloric needs.

Katalista, 800 calories a day? and you say you were energetic, training and dancing?? were you lifting heavy or just doing cardio or what? your body must've been holding on for dear life to any food it got!! Do you still maintain that caloric intake or has it since increased?

Although some people manage to survive taking such a small number of cals (I was once one of them)... I don't think it is a good thing, much less someone like Jenny Worth... even though she may be short and small, I'm sure she trains intensely and probably has had to work hard to build her body, and grow her muscles. and even if only for contest prep, eating only 500 cals a day, almost impossible IMO. She really would be starving herself.

Where did you read that article Suzr? Geez.. even if she does starve herself before a contest, I don't think it would be a good idea to print it and tell the world.. might give some girls out there ideas

"Physical" magazine comes in the mail to anyone who has a GNC card. (GNC is a chain store for vitamins/supplements.)

I read that article too. I think Jenny Worth is awesome-looking, and definitely worth doing an article on, but I really didn't see the point (for the general reading public who typically end up making themselves fatter when going on unusually low calorie diets) of including her caloric intake.

....WOOPS!...now that I just read my last sentence, I know EXACTLY why GNC put that low # in there! They WANT people to go on crash diets, rebound fatter than ever, and buy more diet stuff from them. :bright:

but abuse of T3 can impair one's thyroid function for life.
But if this were the case & her thyroid really was not functioning properly - then she could get a perscription for synthyroid, right?

I read an article on Jenny in M&F Hers a few months ago, I do recall reading a caloric intake under 2,000 & I think it was in the vicinity of 1,500.

If you will recall, originally she didn't do so well in fitness contests b/c she was TOO MUSCULAR - so she doesn't want lots of mass. I also distinctly recall reading that she said, "I'm always hungry." I thought that was sad. That's not what dieting is supposed to be about - depriving yourself of junk, sure, not starving your body. :(

As for Katalista- yes, the body will adapt to low cals - it adapts by the METABOLISM SLOWING (Bad thing) as well as burning LBM. You may be energetic on 800 cals, but I highly doubt you are strong with any significant amont of LBM. I'd much rather keep stuffing my pie hole :chomp: hitting the iron, & keeping my system revved up! :D

You are right NinjawithaGun and FitFossil it was GNC's Physical Magazine. I hope it was a misprint. However I am not sure by the way they wrote the article. I have been surprised before at how little calories the fitness gals stated they ate while cutting.
May be the T3 theory is not so far off.
Any way as I get older (here it comes....the ol gal's ranting again) I find that being strong AND healthy are more important to me than extremely low bodyfat that I can't maintain. I want to be an example of how a women can successfully grow older and be her best. I know alot of you may think that being in your late 30's and early 40's is "growing older", but I'm heading for mid 50's and am looking to be fit, active and doing deadlifts and squats in my 70's.
I am looking for roll models who have done this, and I'm looking to become a role model for my daughters.
I like the direction Spats is going; building the strength first, then see how the bodyfat responds naturally in the process along with a good clean healthy diet.

In reply to the question about my calorie intake now, I am 120 lbs 15-18% BF and ingest about 1200 calories a day. I'm lifting much heavier now than when I was dancing. Life extensionists would disagree to a low calorie lifestyle being bad for you.

As I understand it anything that increases metabolic rate be it food, AAS, thermos etc. will decrease the life expectancy (words of wisdom from none other than MS). For me, at least, low caloric intake will not allow me to have the amount of lean mass that I desire so it is a tradeoff. Will I die younger because of the things that I do? Yeah, probably but damn I will look good doing it LOL.

Exactly, Debu! I saw the pics of herself that she was signing, and she looks monstrous! It's like they only take her pics in front of small trees and rocks so she'll look bigger! :lmao:

:laugh2: :laugh2: Excellent wording!! Do they have a tree big enough to make me look tiny???

Torchy;)
