What is racial profiling?

Lately in Toronto, Canada there has been a great deal of discussion and complaints from the black community towards the police suggesting that the police are "racially profiling" blacks and other minorities. What is meant by this term? Preceeding this discussion on the news there were 3 reports, one dealing with a shooting. The other two dealing with firearms being seized from gangs. All those being arrested in both stories were black. Out of all of Toronto's murders, around 160, most involved gang shootings mainly from black or east indian gangs. Is racial profiling warranted in your opinion? Should people of middle eastern descent in the USA be pissed when and if they are more closely monitored if a war breaks out?
I somewhat believe that racial profiling is justified.

Racial profiling is an effective crime fighting tool. However, some people will be unjustly accused. But that is a small price to pay given the good it will do. Your statements about blacks make racial profiling logical. The fact that there aren't that many black people in Canada make racial profiling easy. The same is true for Muslims in this country. The case against Muslims is even greater because 99% of all terrorists are muslim.

Racial and social profiling often yields positive results.

Chances are, pulling over the car with bumper sickers asking people to legalize weed (and for having a tail light out) will net you a DUI or at least a possesion charge.

So long as the primary reason for the stop is legit (speeding, moving violation etc) I'm fine with it. But then I'm white and don't have stupid ass bumper stickers on anything I ride or drive.
